People at the practice were all very nice. But given what news are being spread nowadays, things are starting to worry me a little bit.
Both the Telegraph and another media outlet said that the amount of EU nationals

RE: Today I was told to 'piddle off'

Were they refused because they could not prove they have lived here for that time or were they refused because they failed to prove they lived here?

They are dealing with a government body at the Home Office that employs low level civil servants that have to tick boxes. They do not think, do not need to think nor is there any question of them using common-sense.

Processing time available is a matter of minutes and what applicants fail to understand is the type of mentality involved!

It is necessary to feed information to them 'on a plate' and even the thickest of them need to have many of the boxes ticked for them whilst noses and derrières are wiped because they are incapable of these basic functions!

Proof of residence can be very simple for most children. A letter from the school giving attendance records will suffice in almost all cases. However it is also helpful to instruct the person processing the application with comments such as 'the children have attended abc and xyz schools over that period'. Written confirmation from the school and or school reports will back this up!

If someone is going to apply for permanent residence they must provide the right evidence or it will be refused! The best place to get written evidence is the bank. They have statements available going back over years. Best to have these stamped but it is possible to ask for hard copies directly from the bank. These show address and economic activity!

I am no expert on permanent residence but the clue should be in the title 'permanent'!

The problem is that there are no suitable rules set up for the post Brexit world so applicants are being encouraged to use a deeply flawed system that has not been adjusted yet!

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/mar/07/uk-tells-eu-students-it-will-not-deport-them-for-lacking-health-insurance

My advice remains that those able to tick all the right boxes should apply for permanent residence but those unable to provide everything needed should wait until new rules are drawn up and better training and more sensible boxes can be created for ticking!

Everyone would be able to provide suitable paperwork going back over five years if they had been aware it was necessary!

The Home Office always manages to send out obnoxious comments just as HMRC seem to send me screw up letters on a Friday so I have to stew over the weekend!

The Home Office refused one of our friends a visa (Non-EU Swiss resident) on the grounds that they believed she would have to work to pay for the visit. Ignored the fact that family are worth £40m and she did not technically need a visa anyway if travelling with EU family!!!

They really are a bunch of prats!

They cannot produce tax payments, utility bills, or other sort of proof. It is not only individual obnoxious comments, it is the threat of Home Office decisions too that is hanging over us. I have now applied for a permanent residency card but have already been warned that even if I get it, it will lose validity as soon as I stop working and retire. Not what I want to do but may be unavoidable at some point being 68.
