I don't think I'll be alone by being slightly horrified by the stories, especially the last one. I don't actually believe it!
I can identify with that. I have many times come across them attempting high altitude mountaineering trips within a 2 week window, where there simply just is not enough time to acclimatise to the altitude. It often, inevitably, results in failure to reach their objective and more worryingly altitude sickness. In addition many of them seem pushy, bolshie, obnoxious and full of sh1t. They are often over confident and under competent with regard to their fitness and mountain craft skills. Never trust a yank you don't know on the other end of a rope.

[/quote]

Yes and no.

My brother moved to the US in 2002. He gets a set 2 weeks annual leave, but another 10 days or so a year which he can only take as occasional days; for illness, funerals, to make a long weekend etc. The number of occasional days often increases with length of service. With his previous employer (Playboy no less - who incidentally are very good employers) he had about 6 weeks a year off in total.

There seems to be much less (i.e. none) legislation around holidays, in fact much less employment legislation altogether. Some employers will therefore offer better holiday terms to attract and keep good staff. Great for the educated and better paid middle classes, but tough for the working folk in bum jobs on low wages.

RE: Pregnancy and working...
