I'm standing for RCVS Council this year having found myself increasingly concerned and frustrated about certain aspects of the profession and its regulation- in particular the fear factor that seems to have flourished to the point that vets are

RE: Caroline Allen for RCVS Council

And therein lies one of the main issues we have. RCVS is of course the regulator and uses that as a reason not to get involved in issues that are quite crucial to the client/ vet relationship. The BVA is a membership organisation and one to which many vets don't belong and-at least in the demographic I know best- if they are a member it's simply because of the benefits. They don't get involved more widely and see it as 'not for them'. It's a dysfunctional situation.

That's why I suggested we need to debate who is best placed to take this on, so thanks for picking up on that. I'm standing for RCVS Council because I do think it is the best venue for discussion and action on the issues that most matter to me.

RE: Caroline Allen for RCVS Council
Well one of my 'frustrations' is this very issue. The drug companies cherry picking drugs we use all the time to good effect testing them (often poor studies) on lab animals to tell us what we already know, then licensing them back to us at vastly inflated costs. You can't really blame the drug companies- after all they are just businesses- but the legislation has created that situation that feels pretty immoral. To top it all it seems we are supposed to be grateful for them doing this.
I've mentioned this once already. You do know RCVS has a business relationship with VMD and that BVA has more influence on VMD policy through its annual consultation with VMD don't you?

Well one of my 'frustrations' is this very issue.
So as a practitioner I would certainly like to see changes in the cascade and would be supportive of an appropriate challenge. The big question of course is who would be appropriate people/ body to bring that challenge and I'd be interested to hear people's views on that.

RE: Caroline Allen for RCVS Council

Hello, and welcome to our forum.

As it seems topical at the moment; would you be prepared to support a legal challenge to the cascade regulations in the courts; either by the RCVS, or by an individual or group of M'sRCVS?
