Homosexuality was illegal until the 1960s in the UK, WW2 happened in the 1940s. Should everyone have turned their backs on the UK then?

Every country has specific laws that we can disagree with. On access to abortion in N Ireland, that needs to be made a legal free choice in N Ireland and hopefully will be made so soon. But that does not mean that a person from the UK should not vocalise their disagreement with Trump's policies.

For example he has stated the there is too much freedom of speech and he plans do something about that. He has actually gagged Dept Agriculture and Dept Environment Scientists from normal public/press communications without specific review and permission from political staff.

For example he has said that he will unilaterally build a wall on USA/Mexico border but he is going to 'make' Mexico pay for the wall. He us ignoring the sovereignty of Mexico. Do you think we should not comment on that?

Are you saying because the Abortion law in Northern Ireland does not allow free choice legal access to Abortion there, then we should not comment on Trump?

[/quote] I do not appreciate AT ALL Donald Trump's so called locker room attitudes to women which are frankly embarrassing and demeaning and also kind of pathetic really. I also fear for his bombastic approach to many subjects but the main point I would like to comment on is abortion . I am sticking my head up well above the parapet here so please bear with me. I think of course safe legal abortion is a right in many cases ( foetal abnormalities , rape cases , where the mothers mental well being would be seriously compromised ) But lets be honest about the facts the abortion rate in the UK is rising especially among women in relationships in their 30's and 40's and apparently ( so I have read) almost 4 in 10 are from women who have undergone the procedure before. WTF ? Contraception has never been more available including the morning after pill . Abortion should not be considered as another form of it. At the end of the day , although I am sure I will get panned for this 'archaic' view , it is still a life denied .

i agree with you, Micheal- we are in a pretty dire situation. Trying to increase our trade with somebody who wants to decrease their imports.

there are a number of elements to this- trade and diplomacy and how far do we go to appease.

i note that trump said he doesn't want to meet prince Charles- what if the Queen has a cold or something- will trump cancel?

David, I think it's true that both sides try to control the narrative.

Trump has silenced various groups such as the environment protection gency and banned them from communicating with the public without it going through his office.

He shut down the national park agency because they tweeted something he didn't like.Inthink if you are looking for a new poster boy for the book you referred to- the Donald's your man!

I for one don't want to shut down free speech- I think we learn most when we hear what others have to say. I think that using free speech to fuel hatred is monumentally egregious and I think that should be challnged robustly.

Dissing people who sign petitions is rather egregious too- especially when one assumes that this doesn't lead to further action.

Back to Trump- when he decided to print the crimes committed by 'aliens', he started to look a little like Adolf, I'm afraid.

Our electoral system is far more corrupt/distorted/dishonest/unrepresentative (take your pick) that that of the US, At least Clinton only got around 48% of the vote compared to Trumps 47%. In the UK 2015 general election, less than a quarter of the eligible electorate voted Conservative. Even if you discount those who didn't vote, the Conservatives only gained around 11 of the 30 million votes cast.
