Made me laugh a lot! I went along for a couple of their CPDs, but it felt like an Old Boys' club and they were 'discussing' a proposal to the RCVS, which those in control had already made their minds about...that was yeeears ago, maybe it has changed.

Not happy with the ATV thing , you get vets shoving nurses out of the way to bill other peoples TPLOs etc .Vets picking insured clients for rechecks. What if several people are involved in the case work up ?. It also encourages less than targeted prescribing and blanket treatments for minor ailments before they get better on their own. Edited Histories where FOC courtesy consults are not booked down and written up because its going to spoil someones numbers.

Not necessarily. It depends on what you charge for the first consultation.

Average Transaction Value - the amount you generate each time you see someone and charge accordingly, divided by the number of consults. So if you do loads of no charge follow ups, ATV is low.

Either that or all terrain vehicle...

Didn't realise you were in NI - so AVSPNI is the right choice for you. Picking up on the thread of turnover, at the SPVS Final Year conference, we encourage correct charging. I've made the point for a while that having as high an ATV as possible is a good bargaining chip, ie "I always charge the right amount"

Very few practices can afford to pay > 20% turnover. Remember that is 20% of turnover after the thieves have taken their share (VAT) and that it's total cost including employers NI and subscriptions, CPD etc not just headline salary.

[/quote]In my very first job I was a sole charge locum and when the boss came back he commented that he'd never taken so much money in a week. 'OK' I said (I was on £50 a week - that's right five zero)!, 'in that case you won't mind giving me an immediate rise'. 'How much do you think you're worth he asked'. Not wishing to be greedy i suggested £80/wk. He agreed right away. I followed that mantra as an assistant until I became self employed and always asked for more than the going rate and guess what? - I got every job I applied for. My daughter has since been a chip off the old block - 'I'm good you need me'. Employers like that self confidence.

But then, as most others on here will probably agree Jon, we're both arrogant, self-important, overly-assertive, narcissistic, solipsist.........best to try and hide that at an interview!

As an employee I made sure I knew what my turnover was before I discussed salary. In other words, what my value to the practice was, not what I was "entitled to", because this is what others are being paid - according to SPVS. You don't know what revenue others are generating. It might be more and it might be less. Either way, for an employer revenue counts.

It isn't, I think we get lumped in with Scotland for the surveys- not sure though.

Omagh Day was good, decent talks, met a few people I hadn't seen in years and met some new people at the dinner. It's good that the RCVS president always comes too. I'm from Omagh so called in to see the folks before I hit the Ballygawley Road :-)

Good news is that it's snowing throughout the Alps but still not had the season defining big dump yet that will cover every rock off-piste.

i was in La Rosiere last week, and was glad they were not my skis, plenty of Snow in La Thuile though. Obergurgl looks more promising for the first week in February.

Virtually every resort has snow cannon now, some cover most of the popular runs but its still got to be cold enough for them to work. Western Austria actually has the best snow at the moment which is as well as that's where I'm going in a week on CITS. There was a big dump there earlier in the week with more forecast this weekend and its even snowing in France and Switzerland with the first real snowfall since November, although they have long way to go to catch up.

Join the AVSPNI instead! Who wants to go skiing when you can do your CPD in the glamorous surroundings of the Omagh AFBI path. lab (I only got home a couple of hours ago cos I stayed for the dinner this year) and that wee room in VSSCo? The spring and autumn conferences are good too. I considered SPVS when I was thinking about joining stuff but AVSPNI is definitely handier, good quality clinical CPD and they have a business management series of 3 days coming up if you're interested in that side. AVSPNI is really worth the money IMO; the only slight disadvantage is that you have to register in advance for the CPD now as it's so popular whereas you used to be able to just rock up.
