I have a client who had a dog and a budgie, she is an old lady and quite unwell. I had a phone call from a friend of the client in November asking about having both the animals PTS

RE: Advice Please

Well said Evelyn !

RE: Advice Please

[quote user="Rebecca Marchewka"]Anyhow, dog now back with its original owner who is very happy.
thank you for you thoughts. Really helpful to get some opinions while thinking about what to do for the best.

I am the OP - no longer anonymous as all the people involved are now fully aware of the situation. I suppose there was never any need to be anonymous, I was just feeling a bit paranoid / worried about the situation.

Anyhow, dog now back with its original owner who is very happy. I have said I will help if she can't cope with looking after her. The person who has had her in the mean time understands the situation and will take the dog back if the original owner decides that is for the best.

All in all the best outcome I think.

thanks again

But as for your dilemma when the dog was brought in as a 'stray' then I would not have dealt with it any differently from any other stray - contact the owner and if not able to, call the dog warden to collect it and let them deal with it. It is not your responsibility to get involved in the politics of who has/ what happens to the dog.

In any event I would not be euthanasing anything until I had consent forms signed by the owner in person in my presence and the fee paid.

RE: Advice Please

Update on the situation.

Spoke to the original owner who was, I think, pleased the dog is alive and thinks she would like her back.
Never mind how this situation has come about, it is the situation now. Clearly if the dog is to be euthanased now, the OP has got to obtain the request and consent from the owner all over again.

So there is no reason why he or she should not attempt to persuade the owner otherwise, if he or she so wishes.

I would speak to the original owner asap. It will be difficult to be honest without outing the friend as having gone against her will. But when it comes to PTS everybody has to be comfortable with it, the vet as well as the friend who takes the pet there. Maybe you could Portrait it as such which is very close to the truth. Also, sick people can make decisions they later regret. Maybe she'll be happy to be reunited with her pet? You could share it: you have it over night and taking it on long walks on weekends, she during the day when you work.

Also, the friend needs to know, and the new owner. Maybe the dog escaped after all the upheaval?

RE: Advice Please

Horrible situation to be in, especially if it's a nice healthy dog.
