I also have a Petzel - the LED Lenser is brighter and cheaper.

RE: Head-torch recommendations
Buy a petzl. Can't go wrong.
Ironically one of mine did! I had a head mounted one and it wasn't bright enough really and the LEDs made blood look black. This was maybe 8 years ago so a little while.

The second best one I had was a Petzl one with a belt mounted battery pack. Lasted ages and quite bright, bit twice the money of the LED lenser and not as good. I really don't think you can beat them (we all have them in our cars, I walk the dogs every night using one, my wife runs with one). I bought a Petzl because of their heritage but was disappointed.

They're not the cheapest but they produce an impressive amount of light with an adjustable brightness level and beam diameter. I use them for everything from surgery in tiny exotics to out in the field with larger animals. I've also found them useful for wandering through rainforests at night in the pouring rain!

I'm currently using an H7.2 with separate AAA batteries and charger - it's worth keeping an eye out on Amazon etc as you can often get them much, much cheaper than the list prices.

Edit: Michael beat me to it!

RE: Head-torch recommendations

It's not cheap but this is what you need:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/1b3/LED-Lenser-H7R-Rechargeable-Head-Lamp-Black/B001PMP340

Small, light, so very bright. Can adjust from a bright spot to a wide flood. I've used it as the sole light source for a number of cow caesers. Also rechargeable and lasts bloody ages. I must have bought 20 head torches over the years and this is way ahead of all the others, and you forget you are wearing it.

The other useful thing is a rechargeable LED floodlight:

http://www.screwfix.com/p/ae0294-rechargeable-led-work-light-10w-12-240v/2587K?kpid=2587K&cm_mmc=Google-_-Product%20Listing%20Ads-_-Sales%20Tracking-_-sales%20tracking%20url&gclid=CjwKEAiAkajDBRCRq8Czmdj-yFgSJADikZgg6U-pTv_UIAUkJ-VAsv7p1kIsxWOv4koEmCX8nM35vxoCJJ_w_wcB

I use that for 'general lighting' on top of the head torch.
