Lots of old people deteriorate and die or go into care after their last dog dies. Probably more about the loss of a raison d'être, You often hear people in their 70s or 80s say I am not having another one ,at the point of euthanasia because they are scared of not out living the dog and leaving it to the mercy of the assembled relatives, who see the vets fees as a drain on a potential future inheritance. Its also not uncommon to have overbearing relatives force an early euthanasia on a distressed old person, prior to putting them in care or more commonly moving them into their home to avoid care costs eroding the inheritance pot.

RE: Smile, you're worth 2.45 billion

A very good argument for making veterinary fees VAT exempt
