It seems the government has accepted there is a problem and is looking into if there is an alternative way of producing the notes.

However, I have no sympathy with anyone whose religious dogma dictates that certain perfectly normal things are taboo and it is pathetic that in an enlightened age they are still so indoctrinated into this dogma that they practice it without question. What is even more ridiculous is that the tallow in the notes is probably totally inert yet they will happily handle other notes and coins which are far more likely to be superficially contaminated by substances from previous handling by infidels and unbelievers who've just eaten a pork sausage (or whatever else offends their particular religious sensitivity). If as reported, 90% (or some such figure) of US dollar bills are contaminated by cocaine I'm pretty sure there are lot of other far more offensive things on our currency. I'd be more worried about catching some dodgy virus from someone's body fluids than being offended by a bit contamination with some animal fat.
