I can confirm that late abortion is a massively harrowing thing for a family to have to go through. In our case was absolutely not 'on demand' and something that has never been forgotten!

Like not living in Northern Ireland, where it's still illegal in cases of rape, incest and fatal foetal abnormality. I wonder how many of the slightly later abortions in mainland UK are performed on Northern Irish women who needed time to scrape up the money to pay for travel across the Irish Sea and for the abortion itself.

I don't know the circumstances of the majority of late abortions. I imagine that a fair chunk of them are soon after the 20 week anomaly scan where the baby has severe abnormality. I really don't think it's likely that women are deciding en masse to just "get rid of it" because they've booked a skiing holiday or whatever the DM would have you believe.

You beat me to it, but those were my exact thoughts. Wynne, I really do think you need to separate the issues of late stage abortion and abortion on demand.

I do not doubt for one second that a late stage abortion is the most harrowing, gruelling, godawful experience, and not something 99.999999% of pregnant women would do except under the most difficult circumstances.

To conflate that with abortion on demand is, I think, really, really WRONG.

Any mum in that situation deserves deepest sympathy, not opprobrium.

It would be if people never had accidents or if contraception was 100% reliable, but since neither of those things could realistically ever be true, the correct time is pre-conception or as soon as possible afterwards.

If you read the Abortion Act, you'll find that abortion on demand is illegal. It's only legal in certain circumstances, yet doctors routinely refer women for abortion on demand. That especially late abortions when the baby could be viable is why I can't trust them.
