Late 80s I was brucellosis testing a suckler herd. One bucked and slammed me on the front of both thighs. I had 2 perfectly butterfly shaped bruises. Tights with little butterflies just above the heel were fashionable then. My bosses wife's comment was "If you wore a mini, you'd start a fashion for tights with butterflies on the front. The other assistant's comment was "If you're lame on both legs, you should trot up sound"

I've also just remembered a bird attack as well. I was dive bombed by a raptor (not sure what species I'm afraid) while out cycling which tried to grab my helmet. I thought I'd hit my head on an over-hanging branch until I realised I hadn't gone under a tree and then saw the bird flying away. I presume I was near it's nest and it was defending it's territory. There's one more reason to wear a helmet while cycling, avoids talon scalping as least!

I have a scar on my forearm that was inflicted by an emu. And one on my left thumb from being bitten by a dead iguana.

Adam Nicolson, in his book on the Shiant Islands in the Hebrides (which he owns) tells of a seventeenth century boat trip where a diving gannett missed it's target and went straight through the bottom planks of a boat. The sailors did not dare to remove it until they were back ashore, as it was plugging the hole it had made. Anyone who has been close to a diving gannett will be half inclined to believe this story, given the speed and power of their impact on the water.

I think your friend had a lucky escape to retain his hand intact!

I was bitten by Henry, the blood hound in the ads. with Clement Freud. "He" was actually female and had pups so when the owner opened the door she leaped at me and broke skin below the navel and [fortunately just] above the perineum etc. ....if you see what I mean.

The answer is.......he was attacked by a gannet, who speared him and came back for seconds.

The victim is a GP and he's looked up gannet attacks and can find only one other in his search. That was a case where an oiled bird was picked up and the bird speared the handlers eye, leading to enucleation.....

[/quote]OK I'll play then. Someone who saw the seal thought it was attacking the diver so threw his bike in as the only weapon to hand and the chainwheel gouged his hand. I have actually suffered such an injury - but without the water or the seal involved.

I got scratched by a lion cub I was vaccinating. Even though it was only being playful, a scratch from a cat the size of a Rottweiler isn't as benign as a moggie, it ripped my trousers as well.
