RCVS registration - fair.

VDS - fair.
Just for the sake of accuracy could I point out that last year (and the preceding 4 years) there was no increase in RCVS fees (although there will be next year) so in fact relative to inflation they have gone down by about 8 - 10%

Also the VDS actually paid a rebate to its members this year - thus their fees have over 12 months also gone down.

Although there has been an increase in fuel costs over the last 12 months for cars - they are still much lower than three years ago.

Employers have had to face increased costs - such as contributions to employee pensions.

Hi David

Not complaining- just trying to gauge what others think and feel about this. An extra car is necessary in my household for this express purpose...just one example where the costs aren't offset.

Regards

julie
I feel like a movie poster taken out of context

The question I asked was 'what has increased this year to justify an increase in locum fees?'

Cars, CPD, we still needed those last year.

The big one this year is any locum who is a Ltd company as the Chancellor is now taxing dividends, everything else is the same as an employee, so I see David's point

But a large majority of households with 2 people working need (or choose to have) two cars, no? And the locum one in your house can be offset against tax, mileage etc so it's not the same as comparing it with an employed person really.

It sounded like a moan, apologies if misread. But, regardless, the car "expense" isn't really one, if you catch my drift.

RE: Locum expenses

Hi David
The big one you've missed out is accountancy fees (if you have one). But David is right, most if not all are tax deductible. Plus you can claim more mileage than if you are in paid employment. The only cpd I pay for is the London vet show as it's good value. The rest I make up with free webinars of which there are loads plus evening meetings.

RE: Locum expenses

Hmmm, it does catch a bit when locums complain about money and expenses. It is a choice for most people, it's not as if there aren't jobs out there for experienced vets.

Expenses:

Vehicle upkeep and fuel - most people pay this, employed or locum.

CPD requirements - much of this can be done free. I would argue that locums have far less requirement to do taught, expensive, practical courses e.g. locums mostly wouldn't be expected to be doing TECAs, TTAs, TPLOs, fracture repairs?

Professional bodies - a lot of employed vets have to pay for these too.

RCVS registration - fair.

VDS - fair.

Tax deductable though mostly?

And £50k/year as said somewhere else - say £46k after deductions - is this comparable to employed people as per SPVS?
