Would it usually be done as a set fee above the daily rate or as a percentage of work seen that night?

When I was a locum, I would often just include the on call at no additional cost, but I was normally doing longer term locums and generally worked at some nice practices so was happy to do that.

If we have a locum in Australia, we pay them the same as our full time vets. that is, they get a "retainer" of around $40 to be on call, then half of all professional fees for call-outs. this way they get something for having the phone, and if it's quiet it doesn't cost us too much, where as if it's busy, they can make pretty good money.

Our OOH consult fee is around $200 up to 10pm, and $295 after 10pm. We include this plus any surgery time and procedure fees in the professional fees for calculating the vets pay. For procedures where there are disposables used, such as putting a dog on IV fluids, we normally pay the vet 1/3 of those fees.

We find that if they get something like a caesar overnight, they can often ear around $400 (a bit over 200 pounds) for a couple of hours work.

RE: Locum rates

For a practice he knows really well and is a regular source of work my OH charges £75 a night on call, but if he's called out after 10pm then another £75 on top. He has use of an on call flat.
Other practices range from 200-250 a night depending on case load. Accomodation also paid if necc.
