Laughed out loud - I don't begrudge Gardner Llewelyn. I've always liked Jonathan Lewis, and anyway, I offer the VetSurgeon locum map for free!

RE: jobs

Good for Arlo, nice one. Just come off the telephone to a practice manager who was placing an advert on VetNurse a moment ago, and she told me they'd advertised on VetSurgeon recently and had a really good result. I asked if she would write a few words as a testimonial, and 10 minutes later, this just arrived:

"We recently advertised a vacancy for a Small Animal Full Time Vet on VetSurgeon.org. Normally our recruitment is done via word of mouth and personal recommendations but due to time pressure wanted to try different option. We had four amazing applications – three were worthy of interviews as one was after more of a partnership role they withdrew. We ended up not only filling the vacancy but hiring two out of the three we met with (and could easily have hired the third had budget allowed). We were extremely impressed with the ease of the process, value for money and the quality of the responses we received which is why VetSurgeon.org and VetNurse.co.uk has been our first port of call for recruiting more superstars to join our team." Holly Charlton, Practice Manager, Watkins & Tasker Veterinary Group

I am on cloud nine here at VetSurgeon Towers. I mean, WOW. It doesn't get much better than that.

And this isn't about the money (though I ain't going to pretend that's not extremely nice!). The job satisfaction I get from having set something up like this, and that it works (4 applications, and TWO of them employed for £99) is immense.

Of course, I am not kidding myself that everyone is going to get as good a result as that (lots of factors involved, not least the location and the type of job/hours advertised), but I'm enjoying the moment!

RE: jobs
If you want a really committed vet nurse then Arlo's route is probably appropriate. It may involve someone moving from one area to another so the wider the net is spread the better.

If you want to tempt someone locally then the local rag may work.
We're making suppositions as to what level of qualification Patrick requires, whether he has accommodation etc etc. as he hasn't told us.
We are, but I would be very surprised if anyone moved to his area specifically to take up a part time job. Full time might be another matter. In my experience part time is likely to attract local nurses who are returning after time off for children etc.

If you want to tempt someone locally then the local rag may work. If you do, perhaps worth getting what the Americans call a 'burner phone' and put that number in the advert. Also perhaps create a special email address. This way the hoards of 'hopeful potential vet nurses' can be controlled. It never fails to amaze me how many replies we get for any type of job advert. Sadly very few are what we are actually seeking!

RE: jobs
I'd also expect that in the local paper, you'd get more responses from people looking for a job of any sort (ie school leavers), than those who have already pre-selected as looking for a nursing job in particular (which I would imagine most visitors to VetNurse have done).
So, although most of the time I've been looking for unqualified trainees a high proportion of the applicants are motivated and had some work experience so they're not just looking for any job - depends which section you place the advert in. I've picked up some real gems this way who have gone on to be wonderful nurses, one rose to the very pinnacle of her profession, but I've had qualified nurses apply from newspaper adverts over the years, they are often just waiting for something local to turn up, often part time, and wouldn't go looking on a national database. The obvious answer is to look in several places, on here of course, but barely a day goes by without some agency or other emails me to tell there is a wonderful qualified nurse banging on my door to be let in.

RE: jobs
I think for a part time job you are going to be recruiting someone who is already in your area
I think that is true regardless of whether you're advertising full or part time jobs, for veterinary nurses or surgeons. See page two of these reports:

https://www.vetnurse.co.uk/agContent/jobs/vetnurse-jobseeker-report-v3.pdf

https://www.vetsurgeon.org/agContent/news/jobseeker-survey-v3.pdf
Sorry Arlo but my most successful recruitment has been via the local newspapers. OK they have mostly been for raw-recruit school leavers but it's surprising how many trainee and qualified nurses are waiting locally for just such an opportunity.
No need to apologise!! I guess there is a very wide variability in the quality and readership of local papers, and some will produce good results and others won't.

I'd also expect that in the local paper, you'd get more responses from people looking for a job of any sort (ie school leavers), than those who have already pre-selected as looking for a nursing job in particular (which I would imagine most visitors to VetNurse have done).

In all, I think the point is less about whether you are looking for someone local or not, but what type of candidate you are looking for. If a school leaver or unqualified helper, perhaps the local paper might be better. If someone qualified or training, then perhaps the more specialised outlets are better.

RE: jobs
