It indicates respect.

Shirt and smart trousers, even clean and tidy jeans would be OK especially for someone travelling. Shoes can be such a give away! Clean and polished (if formal shoes), just clean and presentable if more informal shoes.

Farm practice - would accept less formal clothing on the off chance that a visit might be part of the interview and protective clothing not guaranteed.

Still more important is attitude, interest and experience!

RE: Proper attire for job interviews in 2016

interview - clean, made some effort to be presentable, but keen, show they care for clients and patients, skills can bring to practice, level of experience, cpd records to see how much extra work they prepared to do?

+1 for smart casual too; short sleeved or a polo shirt and trousers, no T shirt, jeans or trainers. Suit and tie too formal unless you're one of the stuffed shirt brigade

I think if I was the interviewer, I would like to say I couldn't care less what someone wears, it is their ability to do the job I would be interested in. Having said that, I would like to think candidates have taken it seriously and made some effort.

To this day, 35 years-on my former boss David G in Lancashire likes to remind me that I turned up for my interview wearing very smart but light grey trousers [Burtons-best!] and he took me on farm to see how I coped. The trousers ended up mottled green!"Who on earth goes for a farm interview in light trousers?" he asks! But I obviously did something right as I got the job. I then got my own back for my ruined best- and only posh-trousers by making sure that all the staff were aware when a few months later, a client asked me if he, David was my Dad? though he was mid-thirties and I was twenty five! Perhaps employing me had aged him fast? Being unable to resist, I had told the client "Yes!"

At least I wasn't wearing white socks!

RE: Proper attire for job interviews in 2016

Thank you for your advice. Smart casual it is then (along with the Wellies and the boiler suit in a seperate bag :-). I am not a suit-and-tie guy, so I guess I'd never fit in at a place that would require this.

I guess the best way forward is to gain a sense of how formal the tone is at the practice, and try to be in sync with this.

And no - to wear white socks other places than at the tennis court is FAIL

So casual attire can work if clean/ironed/co-ordinated and a suit and tie will be a disaster if they are torn, crumpled and soiled. What you have to ask yourself is "Can I be taken seriously?"

However, never wear white socks with anything other than sports kit if you are a bloke!

RE: Proper attire for job interviews in 2016

The clothing the person offering the job wears is irrelevant. they are not the ones looking for a job

If you want a better chance of being offered a job then it might help if you look to have made an effort, that is good manners

an employer would like you to dress a little smarter than normal and in a way which would make more conservative clients think you look like a professional. Once they know and like you it is far less important

smart casual , shirt/ top and trousers (not jeans) and you can't go wrong. No cleavage, piercings, high heels or rips thanks

some wacky practices might appreciate the reverse to the above but they are in the minority. It's about your personality not your fashion sense.

RE: Proper attire for job interviews in 2016

I know someone who was offered the job on the condition that he removed his earring
