A problem Julian is that saving "...majestic species" is not that useful for conservation, efforts should be on conserving the ecosystems, or curing them in some instances. Unfortunately the cash comes in from saving the species. This can however work eg the work to save the Mauritius kestrel helped establish parks that conserved areas of rainforest. I've not read the report yet, need to set aside a day for it.

[/quote]

Again, I agree Iain, the individual species are just the sign of what we are doing. That is why, personally, I've donated mainly to ecosystem preservation, such as rainforests but I do hope that my descendants will still be as astonished by the wonders of nature as I have been and be able to see the creatures in the flesh. rather than just via ancient documentaries But species like whales have a majesty of their own that stands alone from preserving the oceans as well, quite apart from the barbarity of whale-hunting!

Total insanity. I'm very very glad I'm unlikely to be around in another 30/40 years.............the overcrowding will be horrendous

I agree Hannah, the state of the environment can be depressing My early interest in animals lead to me being a vet and the international devastation is sickening. If we cannot save majestic species like rhinos/tigers/whales and areas like the rainforest, what can we save? We win occasional battles but fear the war is lost! The UK should try to lead by example. I would like to be here in 40 years though, if only to say, "wet old you so!!"
