and yes horse racing next no different from dog racing just smaller numbers.

Go and bet on something else like: will it rain tomorrow?.. if you really must.

Recently there was a lot of adverse publicity for Drumbo Park in NI, where 4 greyhounds were killed ("euth'd") on one night because of central tarsal fractures (not a life-threatening injury by any means). But fuel for the antis. I have seen both sides - worked as a greyhound vet, and owned racing greyhounds (all came home when retired.) There are real dog lovers in the sport, and some very dodgy human beings, But then isn't all life like that? The ban will cause a huge welfare problem - rehoming hundreds of greyhounds? Over here, Wimbledon and Hall Green are likely to close in the next year. The sport is on its knees. I agree that the dogs love to run, but they should not be killed when they get injured as they are rehomable and make great pets. The sport has caused its own demise, by neglecting welfare for too long. I don't think there is a problem with live baiting over here, but plenty of other concerns.

[/quote]True but they are often denied homes as pets and its the crap that goes on in between the racing and injuries as a result of it that is the issue.

Perhaps they will then go bare knuckle fighting instead and inflict suffering on themselves although most are too cowardly for that, even some real sport not involving suffering in animals would do. OMG I'm starting to sound like Wynne.

Or should banning, or the Courts, be the individual's penalty.

Recent BHS [that's British Home Stores, not British Horse Society] events seem to suggest that some of them qualify too.

Add the inevitable injuries, treating them just to get them back racing and killing them (I used that word rather than euthanasia deliberately) just because they are not performing and there are enough reasons to ban it regardless of acts of deliberate cruelty.

Actually it's the same as show jumpers who train their mounts to jump without touching the bars by putting something sharp on the training bars...

Or excessive use of the whip by jockeys, ban horse racing! or, possibly, dog-breeders who breed bitches with small pelvi?? Ban dog-shows or bull-dogs.

I'd be surprised if greyhounds would not chase a lure even if they'd never seen a cat....

It's not the greyhounds fault!

Why don't they just prosecute the offender for cruelty? [to the unfortunate "prey"]

Is it ironic that one of my biggest ahole greyhound trainer clients emigrated to Australia? I don't see any at all now, they've gone to the ahole cheap vet up the road!

Inevitable.

There were a series of welfare problems that came one after another. The head of one of the greyhound racing organisations was caught live-baiting his own dogs, along with several other trainiers. They were using cats, possums and other wildlife to "train" the dogs.

We have a saying in Australia "as nervous as a bag of cats at a greyhound meet". Unfortunately it's too close to the truth.

Other states are talking about following the ban. I think the time-frames are too short (one year doesn't give much chance to rehome large numbers of dogs), but with an estimated 17000 healthy dogs killed each year in Australia as a result of this industry, it's hard to justify allowing it to continue.
