Yes, one of the Aussie journalists said that in their media centre they had 5 screens showing the action, and at any given moment at least one of them seemed to be playing God Save The Queen. I don't think it put them in a very good mood!

Yes recently visited Oz for the first time in about 20 years (initially to attend the AVA conference in Adelaide) and I think you've succumbed a bit too much to the "good life". Some of that pioneering spirit seems to have disappeared from the national characteristics. You've got to be "hungry" for success and I think you're all a little bit too well fed! It is, however, still a great place to visit.

There's no tax on betting, brown abolished it years ago.

The argument that smokers and boozers are good for the country is often spouted but a load of crap- ask your nearest health economist or have a read of some books on the subject.

Great team effort by Team GB - we do seem to be particularly good in the water sports - must be all that rain! Going back to some early comments in this thread about rowers at Cambridge being given special consideration when carrying out their veterinary studies - that certainly wasn't the experience for my son. He rowed seriously for Oxford while studying for a pure science degree and he fitted in all his training in the early mornings and in the evenings and weekends. I don't think his studies suffered at all. In fact, tired and exhausted though he often was he actually said that the physical training helped his academic studies. I can understand that. I always feel mentally more alert if I'm in reasonable physical shape.

There's been much discussion recently on why Britain has done so well. The general consensus is: entering more athletes and more funding available. Oh, and they nicked all the best coaches from Australia.

Whether you think Lottery funding is best used on this is another matter. And perleeeaaase don't go on about inspiring people - how's the London legacy working out? 93 schhol playing fields flogged

Impressive nonetheless.

I know, she had the mare going beautifully. So glad Charlotte won again on Valegro, he is gorgeous. I think she and the rest of the British team have done a lot to move international dressage away from Rollkur thankfully.

Well, I was supporting Laura! My dad is really into his athletics, and he was raving about her- even had a bit of money on her (He never usually bets on athletics)! He is upset with the way the race was run, where the first laps were run really slowly, followed by the last 800m being won in a time that wouldn't be out of place in the 800m finals (apparently, he has been banging on about it for the last 2 days!) He feels it was that that put her out of contention. I think he's more upset about that than the lost money!

It is a sobering thought that one couple: Laura Trott and Jason Kenny have won more gold medals than most entire countries.
