I am starting a limited company for locum work. How much should an accountant cost? Would anyone please recommend an accountant in London or in Eastbourne?
Thank you in advance!

Followed your advice and spoke to Nick Lawrence of Moore-Scarrott. One month on, I'm still with Nick. Will give it ago, starting a company is all part of experience. Thank you very much for your advice! I had one quote of £250 for an accountant help start a limited company, and further £1,400 annual fees ?+VAT for an accountant in Eastbourne. Another quote for £148 a month for a basic accountancy package and bookkeeping, which turns out pricier. Wonder, if a small accountancy firm could be better for a start?

RE: Accountant wanted

Agree with Robin, Nick is fabulous, his replies are very quick and excellent.

I think you're brave going alone, an accountant offers a degree of auditing from HMRC, so is worth to avoid questions. You're welcome to PM or use the Locums forum

Thank you Marie! Sounds like a plan, only I don't have an accountant husband.

PS Haven't seen my mane-less Degu since we spoke. incidentally, made a follow-up call just yesterday but only spoke to owner's relative who seem to believe that the Degu is still not out of the woods. Will keep you posted if that's alright with you.

Cheers

[/quote]

The husband has not actually been involved so is not compulsory- I ignored the complex plans he wanted and the tax return filed just involves a total figure for income and expenditure which is easy to do.

Will wait and see what happens with degu!

I use Nick Lawrence of Moore Scarrott in Taunton and can highly recommend them. Cost is around £1150 plus Vat. Also from April this year thanks to George Osborne we now have a dividend tax. The first £5000 is not taxed then everything above that is taxed at 7.5% I believe. This is on top of your corporation tax.

RE: Accountant wanted

Thank you Marie! Though my tame accountant husband did set up a terrifyingly complicated spreadsheet for recording everything I just use a separate bank account for work expenses and income and use bank statements for completing the return.
