Thank you for the recommendation, Robin and Nick, suppose it's nice to meet an accountant face to face if only on a one-off basis. I had one quote of £250 for an accountant help start a limited company, and further £1,400 annual fees ?+VAT for an accountant in Eastbourne. Another quote for £148 a month for a basic accountancy package and bookkeeping, which turns out pricier. Wonder, if a small accountancy firm could be better for a start?

Agree with Robin, Nick is fabulous, his replies are very quick and excellent.

I think you're brave going alone, an accountant offers a degree of auditing from HMRC, so is worth to avoid questions. You're welcome to PM or use the Locums forum

The husband has not actually been involved so is not compulsory- I ignored the complex plans he wanted and the tax return filed just involves a total figure for income and expenditure which is easy to do.

Will wait and see what happens with degu!

Does it matter where your accountant is based? I use Nick Lawrence of Moore Scarrott in Taunton and can highly recommend them. Cost is around £1150 plus Vat. Also from April this year thanks to George Osborne we now have a dividend tax. The first £5000 is not taxed then everything above that is taxed at 7.5% I believe. This is on top of your corporation tax.

I just registered as a sole trader and file a tax return myself at the end of the year. Though my tame accountant husband did set up a terrifyingly complicated spreadsheet for recording everything I just use a separate bank account for work expenses and income and use bank statements for completing the return.
