I have all the said symptoms described by others. No use taking any pain killers as they do not work...only give you constipation. Naproxen is no use and Dr also gave me Amitriptoline as it has side of killing nerve pain? Just made me so groggy so no not on anything! Dr would not prescribe me gabapentin nor cortisone. Well I am 73 now so can expect such trouble. Only problem is it interferes with my golf swing!

Had surgery in my 40s which didn't do much, just made me more stiff. What used to help when i had an acute attack and had to work, was wearing a good supporting corset for a few hours, or days. What eventually got rid of it altogether was exercising, or the equivalent: having to do real physical hard core work like lifting 10-20 kg weights for hours. Now I think the core muscle strength is the essential thing in lower back pain. Haven't had it for maybe 10 years now. So there is hope!

I also swear by always wearing cushioned soled shoes. I used to jar my back frequently in normal shoes tripping or stepping off a hidden step or kerb where I misjudged the drop which is occasionally inevitable. Now I rarely feel a twinge if I do that.
If you've not seen a medical practitioner don't assume that back pain is due to a back problem. I had severe acute lower back pain after replacing a prolapsed uterus in a cow a few years ago, my GP referred me to a physiotherapist who diagnosed a strained muscle over the medial aspect of my right femur (can't remebre which muscle unfortunately) and gave me stretches for it. The GP had given me pain killers which helped, but I really started to improve once I started doing the stretches.

+1 for seeing a good physio. They'll give you all these weird and wacky stretches to do after they pummel various muscles, make you cry and charge you for the pleasure. It works.

I swear by a foam roller. You can pick one up for around a tenner, lie on it and slowly roll your back up and down. One of the big things with lower back pain too can be tight hamstrings and glutes, so a good idea to stretch them out too (can use the foam roller for that and all).

RE: Lower back pain

If you've not seen a medical practitioner don't assume that back pain is due to a back problem. I had severe acute lower back pain after replacing a prolapsed uterus in a cow a few years ago, my GP referred me to a physiotherapist who diagnosed a strained muscle over the medial aspect of my right femur (can't remebre which muscle unfortunately) and gave me stretches for it. The GP had given me pain killers which helped, but I really started to improve once I started doing the stretches.

RE: Lower back pain

Can also vouch for the need to keep mobile with regular exercises each a.m. after several episode of immobilising spasms over 50 years. Also remember how heavy your upper body is when stooping and the strain it puts on the lumbar spine etc. I recommend using a saddle stool when at the operating table and for intermittent relief when doing long consult sessions.

PM me please. Although at the minute I get excellent relief from just lying on a hot water bottle for a few hours after popping a few ibuprofen, I'm afraid of the day when this doesn't work.

I'm only 30 :(

[/quote]There's no magic to this it just involves a bit of effort: keep fit and slim, exercise regularly - cycling especially, perform pilates and core exercises: push ups, planks, back curls, leg lifts, arm raises etc, sit on a Swiss ball for an office chair, don't slouch on the settee in front of the TV and think of your posture before lifting heavy weights. Then you won't need NSAIDs and hot water bottles or Anthony's manipulation.
