I'm wearing a normal cotton shirt I bought 15 years ago and its still going strong. Much of my clothing is made of Merino wool which requires a 30 wash and so long as I don't let Mrs A put it on a 40 (because 'its only 10 degrees more so what difference can that make'?) that survives as well.

Doesn't happen anymore Wynne. Didn't when I was there (2012 graduate) and they were making an active effort to make it more GP orientated in the younger years.

Clive I've heard some university lecturers constantly belittle practitioners whilst talking to students. Not just criticising the odd veterinary surgeon who'd botched things up before referring, but finding fault with all. The sort of thing I mean is saying to students (over 30 years ago ) "The practitioner didn't do such and such lab test" , implying incompetence, rather than "The practitioner probably wasn't as lucky as I am to have a lab on site"

Students constantly exposed to this sort of talk throughout their clinical years may very well feel that if they don't do internships/residencies, but settle for general practice, then they're necessarily second-rate, and therefore they become understandably nervous.

Anthony Was the Registrar who coined the phrase "Retention Fee Payers" the same one who resigned in a hurry very shortly after the revelation that an absolutely eye-watering amount of money had been spent on refurbishing the cellar?

Epaulettes present so will await the suitable add ons from the the RCVS. Grey to match my hair perhaps?

Only one to confuse with RFP, a term coined by an ex Registrar

Anyway, purely as a symbolic thing, who would like to get a small badge, Blue Peter/RVN size with a change of colour for every decade in practice - not just registered? The change in colour to recognise how long you have contributed to animal welfare and to arrive spontaneously from RCVS who maintain a Register of who holds what badge, should anyone be interested.

In a whimsical moment I was looking at the epaulette straps on my consulting tunic and thinking how nicely a board with scrambled egg might look - shades of South American dictator I thought, then there's the badge with stars as in McDonalds, but that's too easy, so a discrete badge, just like all my RANA/VN/RVNs have always worn on their scrubs and uniforms every day they work, presumably because they are marking something they are proud of.

Rcvs - capital R - you know it is a Regulatory issue

rCvs - capital C - you know it from the College in its broadest sense. This is the contact from the RCVS brand which has [C]harity, [C]ommunication, [C]ooperation, [C]are, [C]onsultation and whatever other positive "C" you can think of. Your reaction and level of engagement would be quite different

rcVs - capital V - you know it is a registration or further education issue.

rcvS - capital S - you know it is something to do with how Universities education and EMS is being monitored.

I don't want RCVS to be VERRA the Veterinary Education, Registration and Regulatory Authority.

RFP is another example of the distance between the RCVS and vets. We are members, paying members at that. The clue is in the title MRCVS!

Yup that's how I feel.

What I do feel though is a lack of understanding about what they do.

Profcom (not sure I've even spelt this right) and another anachronisms are typed frequently on this forum and I haven't got a clue who or what this is all about and I'm not alone am I?

There needs to be a sensible use of English to at least in part explain the processes of what the RCVS actually does as to many and that includes me, you only take an interest when it affects you and I try hard not to get involved with the RCVS. I do my CPD, record it electronically, write good notes and do what's reasonable and in 26 years I've never had need to get involved (that's done it hasn't it

PS I also feel quite strongly that by allowing the RCVS elections to be used by some as a platform for one issue views turns the whole process into a laughing stock, which isn't a great reflection on the organisation, maybe I'll stand as a Remoaner

RCVS is a strange beast, so much seems to happen covertly. Then there are the committee appointments that seem odd - so the CPD review had no practitioners (except as an afterthought).

So yes, unjustified fear, but not helped by the institution itself.

Maybe it comes from the vet schools, in part at least?

I've been working with some new and newish grads recently, as well as having clinical students seeing practice - many/most of them seem petrified of making mistakes, missing things and being sued or hauled in front of the RCVS. As you say it is not rational at all.

While I feel there is no place for yet another RCVS baiting thread I would just like to say that I'm really not sure what there is within the organisation to be fearful and anxious about if one goes about one's career with professionalism and care to the best of one's ability. That fear is irrational and instilled by third parties.

There are a few examples of getting things wrong but Chikosigate is a good example of how they learned, adjusted and moved on. The DC is now separated from the RCVS and if you've done your job properly is nothing to fear. If you haven't then it is your fault not that of the RCVS.

The day I started to wear the MRCVS 'badge' was the same day I felt 16 foot tall and could not get the grin off my face!

The RCVS was remote and mystical but I had joined its ranks. It was there to protect the profession and its members. I believed and still would like to believe it could do this by making sure the really bad were weeded out and the good actively promoted.

I did not expect to be one that would ever need weeding out but also did not consider I would ever join the exalted. So far both seem true.

I did lose a lot of respect thanks to Chikosi but the DC seems to be on the right track again. I am deeply discouraged by the very specific requirements being banded about by groups that claim some form of expertise.

By all means put forward suggestions on how members can do CPD but don't produce a formula as a requirement. It smacks of interference because they can!

Even if there's not an actual badge, it's got to be a step in the right direction to talk about an MRCVS badge rather than an RFP badge
