Had a 3m old French Bulldog in for chipping today that was already chipped, didn't recognise the prefix number. Apparently it's by this company, but every time I call there's an AWFUL answerphone message saying all call

RE: ProtectedPet microchips
At the time, owner said she had mum, father and grandma at home. I would write a letter telling her that I can't work with her if she doesn't tell the truth about the dogs and suggest she would be better approaching another practice.

RE: ProtectedPet microchips

Bloody hell, it's hard enough to get hold of trading standards where I am - having to ring Citizen's Advice Bureau because there isn't a direct number.

Luckily I spoke to someone at CAB with enough nause not to just read the dialogue he had (which was to say that it would be passed on but couldn't promise a call back from trading standards), that or he sensed my peeved off tone and he put me directly through to who I needed to speak to. Awaiting a call back from the person that deals with it... we'll see how long that takes.

Plot thickens with this one too - the same owner brought in a Rottie puppy about 6 weeks earlier that had been docked, and had a story about how the mum had chewed the tail off and so it had been taken to Liverpool PDSA to be docked. At the time, owner said she had mum, father and grandma at home. When speaking to the owner today she said she had only one other dog as well as this puppy.

RE: ProtectedPet microchips
Concerned this may be an illegal import but want to confirm before contacting trading standards.
It is unlikely that trading standards will do much unless there is a good lead to follow as a suspected illegal import. Even our local City of London which is the Animal Reception Centre at Heathrow who are incredibly proactive are reluctant to follow up if they there isn't a trail to follow.

There is another similar thread on here and the dilemma between dobbing a client/breaking client confidentiality and considering the potential animal/human welfare issues. If I was pretty sure it was likely to be an illegal import from eastern Europe then I would report it then it is no longer your concern and the RCVS should support you.
