We have had a breeder give some -ve feedback due to our fees for these services.
A local practice is able to perform a certified litter check for 5 pups for £27 according to our client. I think some bigger practices tend to discount fairly

RE: Litter check fees and litter vacc fees

We would also give a 25% discount on thisnumber of puppies. To do it any cheaper means it's just not worth our while, and we're not prepared to vaccinate anything without a thorough physical exam.

We have very few breeders on our books, but I'm not sorry about that. The few that we do have tend to have their breeding work done at the cheap vets, but bring their pets to us when they're unwell.

I think litter vaccinations can't really be used as a loss leader, as most people will go to whichever vet they already know or find on google rather than the vet whos name is on the certificate. Most breeders also expect cheap work for things like caesars as well, so it doesn't make sense to attract them with a loss leader then not make a profit on any other work you do for them.

RE: Litter check fees and litter vacc fees

Wot Will said.

RE: Litter check fees and litter vacc fees

How long do you take to check 5 puppies? If they just want them checked over for obvious abnormalities I would charge a consult fee or perhaps double a consult fee, depending on how many puppies, but if they want a certificate produced, I charge a fee per puppy, probably £30 per pup. Anytime I sign something, I charge for it, as it's my name/job on the line. They are selling those pups for sometimes crazy money, I don't have a problem charging them for something that increases the value of their pups, and if they get the hump then they're probably not worth trying too hard to keep as clients.

RE: Litter check fees and litter vacc fees

£27 for 5 examinations and paperwork sounds so low that one questions the validity of the process!

However - do the maths - do you get any increased business from the breeder as a result or are you subsidising their business? 25% discount sounds lke a no profit consult, how many do you have to do to recoup that lost 25%. If the breeder is a really sound client that will create new business, then it might be OK.

While on the topic, how about not vaccinating these litters to avoid the hassle of re-vaccinating with a different vaccine? Perhaps the breeders would give a refund of the first injection as theri gesture of good will?!!
