I'd be lying if I'd tell you that I didn't expect it. Perhaps because my borough and most of the people around here are Leave supporters I always thought this was a likely possibility.

And it is likely we will not know for quite some time now. I don't need the NHS, or social housing, or benefits or access to a pension. I don't need any of that NOW but I've been paying for it. I'm well established here and I don't think I will have any problems, but for many, these are questions where they have to put their life on hold until these things are resolved.

RE: UK leaves the EU

Non-EU visa holders are subject to a £500 NHS surcharge to cover a 2½-3 year period. It is a contribution that is not dependent on age or health status. In effect once this is paid the visa holder gets treated exactly the same as a UK resident. Australia requires a medical certificate and will reject visa applications where it is considered the applicant will be an excessive burden on the system. The UK has no such requirement.

Clearly it is on the cards that reciprocal deals will be reached so EU nationals are likely to be treated differently.

As for EU nationals being concerned about being sent home, there are plenty that are genuinely worried this may be the case! Southampton has a massive Polish population!

I would be quietly getting on a plane and going to a country that has a working system!

even in the bad days preEU, NHS treated everyone that needed treatment. The problem (for the NHS) started with health tourists who would arrive from a country that couldn't/ wouldn't supply retrovirals for HIV/AIDS or the serious antibiotics for TB. I am sure reciprocal agreements will be reached - these do not need EU approval.

Don't know if the NHS could afford all those UK people retired to Costa del Sol to come back

RE: UK leaves the EU
There is close to zero chance of any EU citizens being forced out of the country unless other European countries threaten to do the same thing.
Bob, other than the small amount of personal abuse on social media, nobody in top politics is suggesting filling planes and ships with EU immigrants to be deported.

But there are other questions that need answering and we want to know. Things that affect future plans.

When I first came to the UK, I was recruited by an UK company. They even opened a bank account for me, gave me small course to help me understand the difference about driving, they made sure I was confident living here.

What will be happening to our access to the NHS? Will we be subject to private medical care? What if any of us has a health condition already diagnosed? (The same goes for UK citizens abroad). What about my pension? Will I be able to validate the years worked in here (as a member of the EU) if I chose to move back to my country of origin? Or are these years wasted and I need to start over again?

Needing or not I visa is probably the least of my problems. And If I do need one, I will probably be asking for my employer to cover the cost anyway.

RE: UK leaves the EU

It staggers me how ill informed many EU citizens are!
There is close to zero chance of any EU citizens being forced out of the country unless other European countries threaten to do the same thing.

There seems to be near hysteria developing out of absolutely nothing! We have numerous EU friends and acquaintances and they really do seem to have got their knickers in a twist.

Why on earth would the UK upset the apple cart?

Any impact of changes in immigration policies might affect those tempted to move to the UK in the future and possibly limit benefits and housing access.

I believe the UK will end up as a base for many companies to trade with Europe. It can be made a far more business friendly environment than the French style control freaks in the EU.

Moving to Scotland seems a bit premature as is the idea of applying for a Scottish passport. This is my younger sons latest bright idea!

I suspect Scotland will see itself much better off as part of the UK than a basket case economy reliant on EU money.

There will be a lot of angry talk from France, worried talk from Eastern European countries and sense from Germany.

Next year the EU sceptics may be in charge of quite a chunk of the EU and life may change significantly!

RE: UK leaves the EU

nobody is going anywhere - we will still get EU graduates coming over, the NHS will still depend on pinching everyone else's qualified medical staff, we will do away with our MEPs and save a small fortune to replace them with 'trade negotiators' at a small fortune and we will still comply with every EU regulation if the product is going to be sold in the EU.

A total ban might instead increase demand - I don't say that I support it, but it is a point of view.

RE: UK leaves the EU

If I wasn't already a confirmed Brexiter, that would have convinced me.

We can now at least ban the importation of ivory to this country, and slightly lessen the appalling slaughter in a totally unnecessary and barbaric manner of these highly intelligent, sentile and endangered animals.

It beggars belief.

On the other hand, there is only one material that can be used in the construction of ivory towers!!

RE: UK leaves the EU
The thing I hate most about Leave is that every single one of the key players - Boris, Farage, Gove et al - after getting the result they wanted has walked away! It seems crazy that we have a new PM that was pro Remain.
Not really! We have a new PM with a record of tough but competent management. The markets seem to like her, the Pound has risen somewhat and people are starting to accept the realities and look to the upsides as well as the downs!

Ms May has a job to do and that involves sorting out the best for the UK. She has a history of surrounding herself with quality staff and not yes men.

She is also not part of the boy's club that has run things recently. She did go to Oxford but should not be downgraded that much for that (I was born and brought up in Cambridge!).

We cannot be sure yet that the Brexit negotiating team will not be Boris, Farage and Gove! I still think that Boris has a lot to offer.

Yes, the UK may become the most dynamic economy in Europe. Time will tell!

RE: UK leaves the EU

The thing I hate most about Leave is that every single one of the key players - Boris, Farage, Gove et al - after getting the result they wanted has walked away!
Still investing in the UK!
Of course they are. Once the red tape is gone, the UK will be the new China! ;-)
