In a mixed practice the large animal/equine side is highly unlikely to be farmed out, so this would need to be taken into consideration in deciding a fair pro-rata rate.

Wynne

RE: Part time salary

I don't think it is as simple as Wynne illustrated - although the mathematics to work it out pro rata is basically correct. But I would do it with actual contracted hours, not just 'days worked'.

(Do people still work a full 5 day week?? My vets are on 3.5 or 4 day weeks...which is still usually around 40 hours....!!)

Anyway, you need to know what a full timer in the same practice would be paid, and what hours they would work, and then work it out pro rata.

Thus, my 'part time' vet works 2 1/2 day week but, because the full timers are 'only' on a max 4 day week, her wage is more than just 50% of theirs.

The other part of this is what you're actually worth to them! And that, remember, is up to you to say! Vets are really poor at valuing themselves - as a 10 year graduated vet, who presumably has some experience, you'll be far more valuable than a new grad. If you're 'stable' in the area, and therefore likely to hang around, that adds value too. Do you have any extra qualifications/skills? Add a bit more. You see what I mean?

RE: Part time salary

£200 a day for a 3 day week = £600/week.

Assume Anon works 48 weeks per year.

That's £28,800 per annum.

The full-timers won't be happy - unless earning £70k after 10 years.

Work in a job-share but don't get paid holidays or any "normal" 'extras' - because when it started 10 years ago we agreed that it would be on a locum-type basis to fit in with life as it was then. So - don't need to give notice of taking time off (but I do), no paid leave (but I rarely go anywhere).
