But the crux of the new policy is that it excludes emergency referrals. I would say that a shattered elbow is an emergency and not appropriate to send to the nearest approved practice.

Lived in Taunton, Cave Referrals near Taunton but expected to go to Bath or Bristol, both an hour and a half away!

The definition of emergency seems to need a little clarification!

Indeed - there is a world of difference between 'not immediately life-threatening' and 'ok to wait without veterinary treatment until the Tuesday after a long weekend'

Yes, I agree. I have been called out for fleas at 3am, so I know what some people can be like...!

I think a fairer question would be "was it necessary to see this patient OOH".

When I used to work in OOH clinics we would often see none emergencies often with trivial conditions just because it is convenient for the client. I can see why insurers, quite rightly, don't want to pay OOH premiums for sneezing cats and dogs with dietary diarrhoea at 4 o'clock in the morning.

I have noticed this creeping into insurance forms- asking you to tick a box to say that injuries were life-threatening if OOH services were called on. It's not right.
