That I can understand. Don't get me wrong I'm friendly with my clients and am on first name times with quite a few, but currently there are none that I would invite round for dinner.

Ditto. A lot of people that I socialise, or do horse stuff with, are also clients. I tend to apply the 'would I invite them round for dinner?' test to people when deciding whether to accept friend requests.

I changed all the privacy settings on my Facebook account once I was in final year. Considering the only time people seemed to take photos in the last 2 years of vet school was at parties/events, looking at the photos on my facebook would have given anyone looking a very distorted view of who I am as a person.

Since graduating in 2012, I am very careful to keep my professional and personal life separate. I have had a few clients try to add me as a friend, but I politely decline each time and give the reasons why. I have enough explaining to do coming in on a Monday morning covered in bruises/scrapes after rugby at the weekend!

Actually as you're as much of an old fart and dinovet as me then I'd let you off. I do try to be 'with it' and have a social media presence but it is very much the last thing I think about rather than the only thing like many youngsters. That said though I have to nag one of my young nurses who is nominally our social media person to do stuff on Twitface.

I was thinking more that if I was employing a young person who had not embraced modern technology or was so anti-social they didn't use social media they probably wouldn't have much personality or capability so would be unemployable.

Thank you for all the replies , very helpful, although no replies from young employed vets. I think everyone who uses social media should look at whats out there about them every once in a while. At least when I was young and giddy there was no permanent record for posterity.

Nah, but in the vanishingly unlikely hypothetical event of your applying for a job with me you'd be at a distinct disadvantage against an applicant who had the rare property of not going in for all that codswallop.

As I have no intention of applying for a job with Atko it bothers me not that he considers me a twitface and an unemployable social pariah.

Having a Facebook account, twitter account and being on strava, I'd be unlikely to get a job eh?

I sometimes google a potential employee, but it would have to be awful for me to hold anything against an employee. For example, I drink maybe once or twice a year, but used to get 'very merry' at parties. If someone judged me from some of the resulting photos, they would think I was partying very hard!

Twitface is a very good place for insignificant people to wield perceived power without engaging their brains.

I avoid it as much as I can because of the bitchiness and nastiness. Thankfully mostly aimed elsewhere but we do have a few historic detractors!

I rely on staff to keep an eye on things and they certainly do check out those that are considered for jobs.

I used to enforce strict rules on banning facial piercing, visible tattoos and use of mobile phones. These are now removed from the terms and conditions of work or at least toned down to 'not excessive', they are now considered a social norm. I would think someone who hadn't embraced social media was a 'twitface' and some sort of unemployable social pariah.

Yes we do. Usually students asking to see practice too. I don't think I would ever use the information against them, more to get a better 'feel' of them as a person.

Its a way of finding out if there are drug /alcohol issues ,or just an over active socialite that is going to be prone to the Monday morning sickie. And you do not want their other halves having access to your premises keys OOH if he/she is a drug dealer or petty criminal .Thinking mostly about nurses ,but some vets too.

I was discussing this with colleagues at a recent congress and because I had a girl working for me who was a soft porn star 'glamour model', someone joked: 'Most of us look on Facebook to search for a profile of a potential new employee, Martin trawls porn sites and magazines'!

Seriously though, I have to say until that point it hadn't occurred to me to perform a Facebook search but it seems others do. My nurses are more likely to do a social media search than me.
