I am occasionally asked to perform consults in my home. So, basically working from home. Is it a thing that we as vets, can do?

I need to think on it very carefully!

So, going to their house is probably the best option? Would house visits be the right answer?
What's your opinion of this?

RE: Working from home

Thinking about this and apart from all the legal stuff , if i were you I would keep my home as a consult free zone because sooner or later someone will turn up with an RTA or a fitting dog and because you've done a consult for them it will suddenly become your problem.
I would like the customers to pay for the consult, it all depends on the bond with the person, if it's a close member of family or a neighbour, I will obviously not ask for a payment, but a customer who wants to see me will have to pay.

RE: Working from home

What do you mean by consults? I expect many of us have had a neighbour drop by to ask for advice, or been asked about a case mid shopping trip, done a quick recheck of a lame dog on a dog walk etc - it's pretty difficult not to without seeming rude - or are you charging for the consult, prescribing etc?

RE: Working from home

Officially it should be registered with the VMD as you will be supplying medicines. Not horrifically expensive until you get a VMD inspection.

There may be some business rates to pay and even planning permission requirements.

Depends how much work you are aiming to do but clearly plenty of vets do a little here and there from home.

So should be registered with VMD? This could be completely wrong but that would spring to mind.....

RE: Working from home

You could run into trouble with planning regulations. Also, if you are seeing cases on your own behalf from home (as opposed to seeing another practice's patients) then, even if you only see 1 or 2 a month, you're running a practice, so will have to make 24/7 provision.
