I still appreciate every weekend morning that I don't have to work, every night that I go to sleep without expecting the phone to ring in the small hours and I still flinch at the sound of a trim phone ring tone as it reminds me of the eighties and a one in two rota. I am glad I did it but it's good to stop , so respect to all those vets still working when everyone else is asleep or down the pub and I hope the sun shines for your days off.
I did nearly 35 years on call, 30 of those sole charge 24/7 365 and I got pretty good at being able to switch off and in the state of mind that I wasn't on call until the phone rang. However, like you Clare, I still go to bed and inwardly smile that I won't be woken up in the night - at least by a client, but there is always likely to be a daughter who has missed the last train and needs picking up from the back of beyond at some God forsaken hour! I've pretty well got over the sudden shock of a mobile phone going off but it still happens occasionally.

RE: Happy Easter
It would be nice to have a live chat room for us, sole charge vet not wanting to wake anyone up for a second opinion (and, yes, small talk out of boredom ). I must admit that working on nights and weekends takes its toll on sleeping patterns and social life, but it also has its rewarding pros. Not missing vaccine and anal ear infection's appointments, but it feels a bit lonely sometimes, like wishing someone else were awake after midnight to get quick answers on the forum.

Went for my self-flagellation Sunday bike ride this morning. Crossing the heath on Staple Hill near Chobham when I was hit by an apocalyptic thunderstorm. Not just rivers of water but the wind was blowing waves of water across the road and the hailstones were turning to slush. On the top of the heath there is no shelter it is very exposed and lightening was crashing around - I was probably the highest point. Nothing to do but carry on. Says great testament to my kit that the only thing that got soaked was my 'waterproof gloves'. I've never found a truly waterproof pair yet at any price. Just come back from an afternoon walk around Windsor with a Chinese relative who was gobsmacked. Now time for Easter dinner.
It could be worse, like having an ex-lap on your handover in the evening (linear FB), and last appointment at 00:30h, a diabetic cat. Just on your 3rd night and, yes, you could have another 4 nights ahead.

Not many chocolate poisoning this Easter, though... Michael, I'm with you

RE: Happy Easter

I, however, who worked all Xmas and Newyear, was given all of Easter off by my great boss and colleagues!
