I loath itunes to the point it puts me off having an i anything.

Why is it so unintuitive (if there is such a word)?

Struggling to find the bloo+y camera on my new Sony Xperia, how daft is that? (Android).

You and me. We grew up when a phone was a black bakelite thing permanently fixed on the hall table, a tablet was something the doctor gave, an apple was something you ate, and windows were things you tried not to break when you were practising tennis strokes!

The fact is I'm an IT numpty. In some previous posts you might as well have been speaking Swahili though I have taken on board the cost of the cloud to the environment which I hadn't considered. Its been an illuminating discussion though and thanks for the advice. It's good to know there is so much knowledge on the list

Not much use when you've run out of storage for photos, music etc. Micro SD cards are incredibly cheap which is the reason Apple don't do them. They just charge you a small fortune for the extra on board storage.

Plenty of other casting apps out there. Admittedly not as easy as with android where it's built in (I have a Sony phone, not an apple religious zealot), but still very easy.

Are you sure that's right? When I tried, there wasn't support from iPad to Chromecast.

I'm not sure is that easy, unless you use a Mac computer to run your Quick Time, I think you need a third party program, which again you might have to pay for if it's Apple, or you might download free if Windows, Android, Ubuntu, etc.

Not true at all, macs are usable with all sorts of 'other' devices, seamless synching with other phones, storage systems and all manner of devices.

Again been available on iOS for years now, free to download and use. Far far better than crap like silverlight or java that needs updating every 2 weeks.

Ah well.

Macs are what computers for the masses should be like. Very easy to use, intuitive, quick to boot up, seamless synchrony with other devices, pretty bullet proof, no clunky anti-virus and no endless daily updating, They are beautifully simple machines. Have had my Macbook for 7 years and its still going strong, still about 3 hours use on full charge. I will never buy a horrid Windows behemoth again.

I'm proud to say I have never bought an Apple product. Several reasons I don't like them. One is cost, way more expensive than even the top of the range android devices. Having to use iTunes for everything and not being able to play other formats eg mp3, WMA etc. And you can't use micro SD cards with Apple to expand the memory.

I use an apple with microsoft word, excel etc. No issues with the mac and good software from Microsoft and Bill Gates has given so much now (Unlike Apple executives)

I almost installed Mackeeper, and just managed to stop before I realised what it was and had to cleanse the iMac.

Nah, Bob it's something the young use. It's sort of like a slide rule but on a screen. We never mastered that, and here we are, so I wouldn't worry about "apps" at all.

I was told by an old mate of mine that it's just an abbreviation for "approximate" so I'd forget about it, as I already have, as far as I remember.

I'm not! I decided to trade some flexibility for the risk of having viruses.

The problem with Apple is that either everything you own is Apple or you're screwed!

Without jailbraking, wich to me is deliciously interesting, you don't have access to a 'explorer' version of your files where you can freely move them. It's a very rigid environment for me. You want security, Apple! all the time, you want to play with your digital toys? Forget it!

List of problems I had with Apple:

Mirroring a movie bought in your tablet and play on your TV. Unless they're both Apple, you can't do it. All the other companies have some way to get it done.

My daughter (the coder who was famously portrayed in the Sunday Times as one of the women changing the face of technology!) says you don't need any anti-virus software for iMacs or ipads. She constantly nags me for not getting one and persevering with a Windows laptop!

I have no idea whether the same applies to iPads, but when it comes to computers it has been axiomatic that Mac users should avoid Norton like the plague unless they want to wreck their system.
