Anthony (Dennison) I have several policemen/women as clients. I've frequently complained to them about being forced over the speed limit, but there's never been enough evidence to nail the real culprits.

That's really scary. I wonder if a dashcam but mounted in the back window would work? I don't know how expensive they are though and it would be annoying to feel obliged to get one because of other people's dangerous driving.

A little trick for you. Slow down towards 35. The artic will have to move down his gears and lose his momentum. Then speed back up and it'll take him about 2-3 miles to catch back up. Repeat if necessary.

!!! You mean the southern Irish drive on the other side of the road?? That explains the horrified looks I keep seeing on the faces of the drivers coming the other way when I cross the (unmarked) border on all those wee backroads going to Donegal or Cavan!!

If a body of complaints are built up against a company, action will be taken (about 15 years ago a Northern Ireland transport company lost its licence to operate in mainland Britain for 10 years due in part to fiddling tachos but also, IIRC, to complaints by the public of reckless driving). Irish companies do a lot of trade with the UK and, via the UK routes, to the continent so they can't afford for this to happen.

If the crap ones have to clean up their act that preserves the reputation of people like my friend Martin. He's an excellent driver and here's his pride and joy- note the Dublin reg and the position of the steering wheel. :

We had far more sympathetic Police here when our headcase staffie went on one of her jaunts!

They closed a major A road as they tried to get her. I seem to remember they ended up opening the car door and telling her to get in. Thankfully I was out on a call so it was our head nurse that had to face the authorities! By that time they had all taken to the dog, she had made some more best friends!

I am glad I am not the only one that finds the Irish lorry drivers terrifying! Their driving standards on the M25 take some believing!!

I've just treated a policeman's dog - 10 minutes ago. I asked him his opinion, and he's as disgusted as I am. Said that all they had to do was close the road, then summon appropriate help. A veterinary surgeon who refused to turn out could be reported to RCVS. He hadn't thought of the huntsman option (in this case) When I told him, his response was "In that case, even simpler"

any vet, farmer, animal handler who has ever worked in the field can make a catch pole with a stick and piece of rope and catch pretty much anything. Basic training, no excuse.

People seem to have ignored the obvious, if the dog bit a policeman when he tried to catch it, it was obviously possible to get close to it.

The pole and wire loop dog-catcher (with quick release catch) still has a place in such situations. They aren't expensive and all vets should certainly have one. So should the police, as I believe they have a mandatory responsibility for dogs loose on the road.

Properly equipped the policeman who was bitten may well have been able to secure the dog avoiding the subsequent cruel consequences without the risk of being bitten. Time for patrol cars to carry one?

If the Holyhead lorry drivers only do 70mph, they're positively restrained compared to the Fishguard lot - but anyway it's irelevant as it wasn't a ferry docking time.

Further point, lorry speed limit on dual carriageways is 56mph, not 70

Therefore a lorry driver who's doing 70mph is a criminal.

Therefore a driver doing 70 needs killing, before the momentum of a speeding heavy lorry kills somene else who is innocent and law-abiding. These maniacs are homicidal, so I would say that every one killed makes the world safer for all others - both human and animal.

Obviously it wasn't at the time of the surge of lorries off the Irish ferry. Any of those homicidal left hand drive b*st*rds would have been happy to kill the dog at 70mph.... wouldn't even have seen it, probably, while overtaking their compatriot who's traveling at 69mph.

They had the legal power to close the road - end of.

Gloucestershire police dealt with the problem the right way.

I suspect that there is a massive damage limitation exercise going on. I wonder if they were trying to herd it off the road and ran it over by accident so decided to make it sound as it if it was a safety issue , Call me cynical, but it seems such a bizarre plan in the first place.
