[/quote]You forget that I am an antisocial, misanthropist, loner so I prefer cycling by myself which is why I don't do organised rides and never joined a club after junior level, I always raced as a private entry. The meeting in the pub afterwards is the reward, it would be no fun if I hadn't earned it and I would feel like a quitter - a bit like I'm trying to pretend I don't feel after not being there on Sunday! Besides I'm also a control freak which is why I'm trying to organise it. Sad maybe, but that's me.

My mate knows this and lets me get on with organising our rides and doesn't want to ride with me because I'm so impatient when he can't keep up on the hills and I won't wait for him.

Not selling it well am I?

So you're not actually cycling together then? I think you're missing the point Martin. Might as well just go to the pub and forget the cycling!

It probably is best to keep it somewhere in the Midlands though.... , but it doesn't have to be an organised event.

In all honesty I had my arm twisted to enter an organised ride (albeit I didn't do it in the end) I just can't see the point of paying someone to do it for me and having to travel somewhere by car to get there which defeats most of the object. Different for a race but not a fun ride.

So, perhaps we should do what I do twice a year with my mate from Brum. Book a B&B/hotel somewhere reasonably equidistant and meet up there on a Saturday night, go to the pub, have few beers and a nice meal then cycle home the next day. You can make your ride as long or as short as you want then, no time constraints, no battling with hundreds of other riders and irritated motorists/locals fed up with their roads being invaded.

Obviously not so good for those up North. Just a thought.

Partly - I woke up late too as didn't get to bed until 3am, then discovered I has a flat, so 45 minutes late starting the ride.

Still, it was great to meet you, Ian, and Neil and put faces to names at the end of the ride. It was a good ride too and a great day for it, albeit I ran into rain in the last 30 minutes.

Sorry all lost track of this. Broke my wrist 3 months ago playing footy with 10 and 8yo nephews so been non bike for 12 weeks, can barely still lift a cat (non union I suspect) along with increasing whisky belly.

Well done for those completing. Somewhat jealous.

I sent a message to Clive yesterday giving my excuses. My knees have not recovered from my 195 mile jaunt the weekend before last. Plus I've got a rotten cold. Glad I followed my head rather than the instinct to keep going at all cost. I went out and quit on 45 miles, left knee was giving out every time I pushed hard and my chest felt tight. I know pain is temporary but quitting is forever but not quitting and f***ing up the rest of your season isn't bright. Plus driving 100 miles each way seemed counter intuitive.

I would normally feel guilty for quitting but I don't so it was the right decision.

I cycled yesterday!

Just a spin around the stable yard on a borrowed bike. I don't know the make or model, but it was a ladies cross country bike.

I haven't forgatten how.

Dress code, T shirt, jods, and joddy boots - I'd just returned from my ride!

Both!!

I'll be bringing a titanium Enigma Etape, beautifully light and strong. Built for fast touring it has SIS couplings. It's an original, as featured in http://www.cyclinguk.org/publication/cycle-magazine/cycle-magazine-february-2016

It also has a proper granny gear as the vast majority of Sportives don't have a proper low gear so people labour up the hills, especially at the end of the ride. Then again this is an audax so 'proper bikes' will be there as well.

I'll leave my touring bike at home as it's great for touring but a little heavy for a day's road ride. I can't decide between my basic alu road bike which has a triple or my carbon bike which has a compact chainset. Probably the Alu bike which despite being alu is a bit more comfortable over longer distance.
