The decision has been reached and is in the public domain so I don't see any problems with discussing it here. I've done 2 of these in cats. One recovered, one died.
They found a thread - but the cat may have only picked up that thread the day before. There is absolutely no way to know.
Who then cut the thread free from the tongue, but was that reasonable to just leave it at that?
You would have to presume, therefore, that when the cat was presented that day, it was actually pretty well. Maybe the thread had just been sitting in oesophagus/stomach - causing only 'mild' symptoms? Until it was released.... so who carries the 'blame' for the cat dying???

Really tricky case - I think the correct decision was reached (but with a slap on the wrist for poor communication and record keeping).

RE: Linear foreign body
I'm not judging him, but I can't believe a linear fb case could drag on for over a month.
maybe it didn't? maybe the first FB was expelled and then the cat ingested FB2 - who knows??. All cases on linear FB I have dealt with have deteriorated very quickly, I just can't understand one dragging on for a month.

RE: Linear foreign body

And they made quite a big deal over the steroid injection, unlikely to do any harm at all.
His decision making might, with the benefit of hindsight, be seen as wrong - but presumably he did what he thought was best at the time and with the information he had available to him. There is a big difference between 'bad clinical decisions' (which we can all be guilty of when judged with the retrospectoscope) and causing harm due to negligence/misconduct etc. No?
I agree, there is certainly a big question over his clinical decision making in this case, though I'm sure we've all made decisions that in hindsight we realise were wrong. I also wouldn't have thought this was gross-misconduct.

RE: Linear foreign body

I agree - it obviously wasn't a straight-forward case because, if it was, the cat would be very dead after a week, let alone a month.

I find those the worst kind of cases - FBs where the signs/degree of illness are atypical.

RE: Linear foreign body

I'm not judging him, but I can't believe a linear fb case could drag on for over a month.

RE: Linear foreign body

I thought linear foriegn bodies should always be operated on - but I used to think that about swallowed pieces of glass as well
