Arlo Guthrie - I appreciate that you need to raise funds to keep the site going. I realise that a lot of the websites I use also rely on advertising. I advertise my business in various ways - but I also realise that everyone is not going to read it or see it. Just as it is your right to ignore my advert in the local magazine, I believe it is mine to run ad blocking software.

If the drug companies are relying on me finding out about new drugs via a website I may or may not visit - then they are not going to get my business. I generally skip past the ads in the free papers that drop through the door at work daily. I sometimes wonder if they could do less flashy ads and more competitive pricing. Send the reps out to tell me about new things.

The only reason I burn junk mail is because it has my address on it - it goes whole onto the fire. I did go through a stage of returning them all to sender.....

Bob, thank you, I appreciate the sentimen, but NO, ABSOLUTELY NOT. We don't get paid by click, and you should only click those things that catch your eye and you genuinely want to click. That provides us with a much more useful indicator of what sort of things members are interested in. Besides which, we remove repeat clicks from the same IP anyway (which more normally come from bots).

No problems with the adverts here but if you want to see how dreadful they can be, go to http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/news/ with adblocker on, then switch it off and refresh the page!

It is almost impossible to find the news!

Arlo, do you need us to click wildly click on the adverts to get more money? Can do this whilst drinking my coffee!

I don't find the ads at all intrusive on this website and generally ignore them which is my prerogative. I do occasionally click on one if it indicates a product I am unaware of.

Well, there are ads and there are ads. I think the online publishing industry accepts that adblocking software has developed as a response to over-intrusive practices, such as pop ups and dodgy code.

I'd like to think that we've always adhered to the highest standards with advertising on VetSurgeon. Never used a pop-up. Adverts are very calculatingly positioned so as to be part of the experience without intruding directly on your activity. They don't follow you up and down the page and things like that. And we've never allowed over-animated stuff etc. And our stuff doesn't do anything spooky (like serving adverts based on what you personally have clicked on or visited). And, of course, it is all relevant stuff. What's to hate?

Problem is that a) if everyone took that attitude, I'd be out of a job, and b) I think there is an implicit contract between you, the reader, and me, the publisher. I've blown a fortune building this website, and I have to be paid to do the job I do. You know that. And you know that the 'price' is that the site contains advertising (I say 'price', but again, advertising here is of the highest standard so it's a very small price).

By using ad blocking software on the site, I feel you are breaking that implicit contract.

Problem is that ad-blocking software may prove to be a victim of its own success. Advertisers / publishers are increasingly finding yet more intrusive ways to circumnavigate ad blockers - like sponsored content which shows as editorial (we don't offer this yet!).

Rather than going down that route, I think I would have to risk losing your membership!

Or alternatively find a completely different business model, though it is hard to think what.

To everyone who does not use adblocking software, and who opens and clicks on one of my emails, THANK YOU. Every time you do, it is a vote of support for what I'm doing. And I am genuinely and sincerely grateful for that.

I hate adverts. I run ABP software. If you had it as a condition of membership I would probably find a different forum.

I burn anything I can identify as junk mail without reading it. You will still (on average) get your advertising clicks. Someone must win the Readers Digest prize draw......

Youtube type boxes that start talking to me when I am reading!

Sadly it has hijacked a lot of things since 'upgrading' to Windows 10! There is no adblocking software that I can see either!

VetSurgeon ads are 'quiet and unobtrusive' so very safe to switch off adblocking software!

The Southampton Daily Echo already has some adblock blocker that makes articles fuzzy until you switch off adblocker! The software is out there already!

Given up looking at their website as adverts are everywhere!!

Really hard to replicate this; something to do with your keyboard. Point is that if you type the @ symbol, it brings up a list which you can select from. If I type Former Member with the @ symbol it brings up a list from which I select your name. Then it creates a link to your profile in the post and notifies you at the top of the page that you've been mentioned.

If you keep typing, though, it starts bringing up jobs too, like this (unknown mention). But now you mention it, mentioning jobs doesn't work very well! Need to get it removed.

Meantime, just don't type the @ symbol - or use it just to select names of people to mention in your post.

I think that must be when you hit the space bar immediately after typing the @ symbol which then brings up a list of people and jobs you can mention in the forum (though I am not convinced whether it is useful to be able to mention a job in the forum)
