It featured the work of the Dogs Trust in deprived areas of the north east and Hull. One quote "we wanted to breed off her so we could get a new kitchen."
Another guy wanted to breed from his bulldog

RE: Dogs on the Dole

I try not to watch this stuff ,you cannot change things for these animals or these people. Charities just encourage them to have pets they cannot afford ,but then the state and the NHS does the same thing with their children.

We see them OOH with some disaster and no money, when the charity people are safely tucked up in bed.

It drives me mad and I have no idea how to make crap people good pet owners.

RE: Dogs on the Dole
I thought the Staff lady seemed to be force feeding it chocolate, biscuits, bacon pasta etc.
Yes I thought that too and when the glad tidings that it was getting castrated were shown, I immediately thought this
I was waiting for it to balloon
and it did look a bit fatter at the end. At least at the very end a glimmer of light had penetrated her mind and she was trying (albeit nowhere near hard enough for a dog that had just been neutered and was already probably BCS 4/5). And the bulldog man "he's not crying, I know he's not in pain" had been overruled or persuaded by the girlfriend "I couldn't bear to think it might be painful and I'll pay for it".

So it shows that all the Dogs Trust advice does strike some faint sparks in some cases and contributes to dragging up the standards of the whole. I think knowledge of dog and cat care at base level has come on a bit in the past 30 years. Most of the dogs in the programme looked in good nick (albeit some too fat) and at least their owners did bother to queue up for the free vaccines - I bet that's good for the herd parvo immunity. I've never seen a distemper case. People actually bother to take their cats to the vet. Some people are starting to think at least a little bit about dental disease. A few more people take their pups to training classes. I'd say obesity and qualzucht are worse than they used to be, but most other things are a bit better.

RE: Dogs on the Dole

Really? I thought the Staff lady seemed to be force feeding it chocolate, biscuits, bacon pasta etc. Given it was just castrated I was waiting for it to balloon! The dog walker w***** was priceless! I thought his microscope was better than some practices I have been too!

RE: Dogs on the Dole

I dunno, it wasn't as bad as I thought. At least the Staff lady was trying to get some weight off it in the end and the bulldog people did the decent thing and got its horrible entropion sorted. Though by the looks of it, still not shelling out for Malaseb or Apoquel. Also, I'm sure they would have tried to breed it if the dog w***er hadn't pronounced it infertile (one of the most cheering moments of the programme). You could see the look of stubborn denial on the chap's face when the vet was trying to explain about the genetics of entropion and atopy "two thousand pounds a pup says it isn't genetic".

Still though, apparently the bottom is falling out of the market for micro dogs, so that should reduce the numbers of poor tiny things that can't whelp being presented. Now we just need market forces for brachycephalics to do their thing and there will be fewer of those needing Caesars too. Sadly, as the programme pointed out, there's likely to be a "correction" time lag where hordes of them end up in shelters. I hope the shelters make crystal clear to potential adopters all the expensive problems of micro dogs and brachys so they don't leave the poor things with grade 4 luxating patellas and corneas dried to a crisp cos they can't afford treatment "because he was a rescue". At least Staffs just get a few skin problems and dodgy stifles when they're old, and that's more or less it.

RE: Dogs on the Dole

Sickening
