I hate seeing police horses being used - for that very reason. It was absolutely heart-breaking to see one being hurt in the recent march by left-wingers.

I've nothing against protest marches, as long as they are well behaved. A perfect example of a well-behaved march was the recent one by the marines, in protest at the imprisonment of Sergeant A.

The right to PEACEFULLY protest is an essential part of democracy, but the emphasis must be on peaceful. Once the evil "rent a mob" thugs become involved, it's a very different matter. Rather than risking the poor horses, a magistrate should be called upon to read the Riot Act, after which, unless the marchers disbanded, the army should go in - with live ammo. Exactly the same rule should apply to football hooligans. Supporting one's team is fine, fighting with the opposite side's supporters is not.

I've never been able to understand why some football supporters are so appallingly badly behaved. No one can be more passionate in supporting their team during the match than Welsh rugby supporters - but they don't go rioting after the match!
