I have billed them and put them in the small claims court three times , they pay after some whinging , and tend to bugger off elsewhere most of the time unless its OOH and on your doorstep anyway. They are civil servants and getting paid anyway so do not let them crap on you.

RE: outstanding debt query

a combination of both, the constable brought him and the dog.so I just can't seem to get the client motivated to chase the responsible person, not really his problem as he has no means himself, so doesn't really care about me.

They can't afford to argue for too long and be taken to court, its bad for appearances.

Equally it works for miscreant officers. I had one PC who was a bad debt and thought she had escaped when she was posted to Cyprus. I sent a letter to the Chief Constable and a few days later a cheque arrived from Cyprus! Similar thing with an RAF squaddie - sent the bill to the Wing Commander.

RE: outstanding debt query

I had a similar problem some years ago. Sunday morning call-out from a police consyable to attend a dog run over on a council estate. I went out, found the dog had an obviously broken back, euthanised it, took the PCs number, and disposed of the body. I billed the ploice, who wrote back that they had discovered the owner, and instructed me to bill the owner. I did so, and after a month, billed again. I then contacted my solicitor, who wrote a strern letter to the police, pointing out that since they had requested the treatment, they were liable for the bill, and, that if they prosecuted the owner for allowing the dog to stray, they could ask the magistrates to award costs including my bill against the owners. The police then paid

RE: outstanding debt query

If the police requested the treatment they are unequivocally responsible for payment. Send the bill direct to the Chief Constable. However if the owner was with him and the policeman was only acting as the transport then its the owner's responsibility. He could theoretically sue the miscreant for his outlay but then you may invent porcine aviation. Sounds like one you'll probably have to write off.

RE: outstanding debt query

You may not be able to but you could assist the client with a claim.
