No. The daft woman doesn't understand British agriculture. She's against people eating meat for gods sake. It's like putting a homoeopath in charge of the health service, a convict in charge of prisons and a paedophile in charge of schools.

Serious question.
Considering he used his last question at Prime Ministers Questions to wish all MPs and House of Commons staff a Happy Christmas, and he has sent official Christmas Cards I really don't understand why this is a story. Christmas messages from opposition leaders are very new, I think Ed Milliband was the first to issue one, so he's not exactly breaking a long standing tradition.

Do you think it is OK to be offered for sale a chain saw that has been nicked by them from your shed? Do you think there is no problem with your rates/taxes going towards keeping them on social security when they are making money from illicit businesses but pay not tax or VAT themselves and they probably have more disposal income than you or I? Are you happy they leave piles of rubbish from their illegal camps the clearing of which comes form same said rates/taxes. Would you think its OK if they've illegally camped on your land, to which they have caused tens of thousands of pounds of damage before you can get them evicted?
Are you seriously comparing with a species that aren't able to think rationaly?
Yes.

Call it profiling. Call it what you will.

Classic example is police stop and search powers. I read a good article on this a couple of years ago. Limited police resources, the statistics showed that black kids were far more likely that white kids to be carrying weapons in certain parts of London. Police use this to influence where they use their limited resources - they search more black kids. They take more knives off the street. The police get accused of been racist - despite the statistics clearly showing a much higher proportion (not just absolute number) of black kids with weapons.

Getting through life is all about risk management. I have good evidence that a traveller is much more likely to steal something or not pay their bill than the average person who walks through my door. Kind of an irrefutable fact. So the only way for me to treat everyone equally is for me to assume everyone is out to shaft me and trust no one. That's not my way. Therefore to protect my business, my staff, my property and myself I need to base things on risk.

To be clear they are still more than welcome. I will still be nice to them. I don't wish them harm, but I do wish they wouldn't come and steal things and mess things up every-bloody-year......

RE: Sacked clients

Im exhausted.
I agree. It's not racist to be against travellers as they are not a distinct racial group.
The crux of the matter is that in statements like this you are discrimating people based on a stereotype. It doesn't f***ing matter if they're a racial group or not, it matters that you can be English, white, brown, black, Spanish, Syrian, Christian, Muslim or vegetarian. It doesn't matter. It is morally wrong to treat a single HUMAN different because you've had a distinctic experience with another.

There is a simple exercise. Think about the worst possible stereotypical adjective that could be applied to a group you believe you belong to but you don't share. Then think why on earth you should be treated differently based on that.
Disagree. I'm not discriminating, my objection against them is their travelling lifestyle - paying no taxes, not giving a damn about anyone else or the environment. It's not a stereotype, it's the definition of a traveller. I enjoy cycle touring and camping, but I pay my way and don't leave rubbish everywhere.

RE: Sacked clients
The crux of the matter is that in statements like this you are discrimating people based on a stereotype.
Is this any different to treating different breeds of dog differently in your consulting room? I imagine you are nice and polite to all dogs - but there are some breeds I am MUCH more likely to muzzle (for example).

I see it as we are using this information as a means to be more aware. We are on the route for the Appleby horse fair and get 'travellers' coming through both ways. Every year they make a mess of all the village greens (rubbish, horse and human shit). Every year a load of petty thefts happen. For those two weeks we don't leave any drugs out. All work done is paid by cash at the time, etc.

We are using the information of that group's history to inform our risk management. We are still happy seeing them as clients. We are not forming lynch mobs, burning torches and pitchforks. We are friendly and polite to them as any other customer. I'm much more likely to muzzle a collie dog than a spaniel. How is this different?

RE: Sacked clients
So... you mean that any Briton who's not abusive and drunk on holidays should really avoid holiday destinations.

RE: Sacked clients
It is morally wrong to treat a single HUMAN different because you've had a distinctic experience with another.
You are absolutely right Francisco. But when one has virtually never had a positive experience from a group I think it is only natural that one would tar the whole lot with the same brush. Maybe there is an issue with them believing that there is no point changing their behaviour if they are going to be castigated anyway but the onus is upon them to make the first move, When I have offered the hand of friendship or generosity I have been invariably shafted by them.
Think about the worst possible stereotypical adjective that could be applied to a group you believe you belong to but you don't share.

RE: Sacked clients

I agree. It's not racist to be against travellers as they are not a distinct racial group. They choose to live outside normal society paying no council tax. I have seen first hand the state they leave the countryside in round here when they camp illegally on someone's land. And of course, who foots the bill for clearing up the mess including human waste? Yep, you and me.

RE: Sacked clients
I do have experience of the different groups and I don't hold the same views as you.
So you are happy to give free treatment to every erm...traveller who comes in to your practice? Do you think it is OK to be offered for sale a chain saw that has been nicked by them from your shed? Do you think there is no problem with your rates/taxes going towards keeping them on social security when they are making money from illicit businesses but pay not tax or VAT themselves and they probably have more disposal income than you or I? Are you happy they leave piles of rubbish from their illegal camps the clearing of which comes form same said rates/taxes. Would you think its OK if they've illegally camped on your land, to which they have caused tens of thousands of pounds of damage before you can get them evicted? If so you do indeed hold a different view to me and you are amongst the meek, self-righteous who will inherit the earth. Best of luck with that.

RE: Sacked clients

I agree with you and Jeremy Corbyn on Syria.
