I honestly believe that they are so happy at work they can't be bothered with holidays. No-one is ever clock watching, often they are here an hour after their shift ended just chatting or helping the other one out and not expecting to be paid. That said they are hardly worked off their feet as we're not exactly busy these days.

It is in stark contrast to one previous employee who was always late, had numerous sick days, left early and took more than her fair share of holiday then complained when I docked her pay. Mind you, she was the one who sent her boyfriend in to beat me up when it all came to a head!

Don't know about the law...but as the staff only get 4 weeks a year (5 for vets) they take (and should take) all of it! Everyone needs a break!! Do they struggle to get other people to cover their hours maybe????

As far as paying them for time not taken..... As you are basically then paying them twice, wouldn't you be better enforcing the holidays anyway???

Last year the holiday pay was a surprise additional bonus because their contracts actually state they won't be paid for unused holiday. There is a danger that this year they were expecting it.

However, I have heard that it is now illegal for employers not to make their employees workers take their holiday entitlement, pay in lieu or not.

Unless they want a minus bonus they won't be getting one this year! But I will pay them for the holiday entitlement they didn't take. I'll give them a cash gift in their Christmas card but as one speaker at a practice management seminar I went on said: 'Reward staff for their work not because some bloke who probably wasn't the son of God probably wasn't born around this time of year'. Bah humbug.

It isn't given for a 'specific purpose'. I hope it does help with staff retention (as does replacing uniforms whenever we are asked, pay rises every January without fail, not deducting pay for a doctor's appointment etc, making sure parents get to the child's nativity, alongside all the other multitude of small things that matter to an employee).

However, in our case, it is just a Christmas gift to say thanks.

I stopped being an employee in 1989 ,honestly can't remember any bonuses , the odd meal out possibly . Thinking about it ,something based on growth parameters is probably not a bad idea, but probably needs to be more fluid , I think a carrot that is dangled too far in the distance and only paid out annually will probably get ignored.

Yeah.....maybe wouldn't work at our practice...all staff get a bonus from us (£200 upwards) so don't think a few client tips would replace that!

yes, they get to keep the change quite often,we get wine and chocolates too. The nurses often get "have a drink" and sometimes "would you like a drink" sometimes flowers.

I think a nice staff photo on the annual christmas card works wonders ( I stand at the back almost out of sight), the clients all comment on how well they(the nurses) scrub up, and the tips give them a bonus.
