Just wondering if anyone can recommend a nice reference text for small scale poultry medicine? Have a whole rash of clients who have decided to keep chickens but who know less about them than I do.
Any suggestions welcome!
Thanks.

Re: Backyard poultry

advice number 560 : get hardy breeds, not fancy showing breeds.

Re: Backyard poultry

Advice your clients will politely ignore, number 234: get the birds from a respectable source, vaccinated against Marek's Disease.

Post-mortem anything dead. It is very instructive.

Poultry are quite easy to manage under GA and heal well when huge wounds and so on are sutured. But give the owner the estimate in advance.

Re: Backyard poultry

Look for the books written by Victoria Roberts on poultry. Very big in the poultry world before she became a vet but the books are straightforward and easy to understand. I have the BSAVA Farm Pets book as well.

Re: Backyard poultry

Hello! If it's for you, the BSAVA Farm pets guide is very good by Freda Scott-Park et al. Otherwise ask your clients if they are on the net and if so there are lots of good "forums" for new chookie owners ie. omelette.co.uk etc.

Good luck with it!
