Since some Deans of schools, and RCVS Council members haven't had a day's experience of working in practice, then it's hardly surprising that new graduates emerge so ill-prepared for actual practice. I'm convinced this is a significant contributor tothe drop-out rate from our profession.

The RCVS is the Inspector. Council, even revised Council has University representation. When Councillors could be part of the Disciplinary process a LRO was sought to separate Council membership from the Disciplinary function - the new status quo.

Perhaps this Governance Review should be extended to apply for separation of the Inspectorate/Standards setting for Undergraduate education from Council

I think it would be a good idea."

Something similar could be said about RCVS Governance.

RE: RCVS Governance Review

I was for years implacably opposed to both lay and appointed representation on RCVS Council. Claire can probably remember me giving her a hard time on the subject! I've changed my mind - due to the attitude of others on this forum towrds out-of-hours, and house visits. I now feel that lay representation is essential to safeguard the welfare of our patients

I do however think that any attempt to bring all those who are involved in treating animals into one organisation is doomed. The farriers are never going to join us - not unless Royal College first show themselves to be as proactive as the Farriers Registration Council in both detecting, and prosecuting the various unqualified people (chiropracters, rodentologists, Reiki healers etc) who break the law by both "diagnosing" and "treating" disease in animals

If you contribute to the consultation then these influences are diluted

RE: RCVS Governance Review

Proportionate, Consistent, Accountable, Transparent and Targeted. Other principles identified as key to good regulation are agility and flexibility.

A nice bunch of sound bytes ,that they appear to be admitting to be failing on , whilst of course being an FRR since 2012 ?? Glad they are not 2nd rate .

I was not comfortable with the interchangeability ideas regarding nurses on the council ,it appears to be a sop to the increasing numbers of JVPs "squeezing anal sacs and clipping toe nails" their way.

I suggested no academics ,no elections , no lay people, just a jury service ,random selection from all on the register , its about the ability and fitness to practice ,so those in practice should be involved . Simple but novel idea I thought.

Never really happy with Colonel Bellender's wife and Baroness Botox getting places after a nod from some Sir Humphrey.

And lastly whatever they do just bloody well get on with it , don't leave people dangling about for months on end.
