Thanks Bob. I had a kevlar flak jacket knitted when I was Treasurer and keep it for special occasions. I take your comment about being "posh" in the spirit I am sure it was meant, but there is also a more relaxed attitude here at the College that creates a more positive working environment as well as, hopefully, making us feel more approachable. When I started on Council one would never have entered the hallowed portals of the RCVS without a jacket and tie, nor take it off without permission. Today I spent an hour at lunch time on the floor of the members room trying to do yoga with other members of the team!

For our next Council meeting we are experimenting by shedding our robes and regalia, and sitting in a much more relaxed seating format. Some will say it reduces the gravitas of Council, others might feel it is a better way to get serious business done. I do worry that photos of Council discussion with members togged up in gowns does make the College seem out of touch, which I can assure you it is not. At the end of Council each member will fill in a form for them to choose to carry on with the old format or the new.

Have a good week (and I mean that sincerely, folks)

I felt pretty much the same when our CEO created the post of customer services manager. Of course, we offer a service to the public as well as the veterinary professions.

Whatever the terminology, I think the important thing is that we have seen a real change of attitude and an emphasis on providing a high standard of service. I keep hearing from members that have dealings with the College are having a more positive experience and we have several internal KPI's that monitor the service that we offer.

The CEO purposely chose the terminology to be a bit provocative and bring about change.
It is not for the CEO to be provocative but clearly masses of changes were required. When the girls have misbehaved at school I talk to pupil services. When I speak to the RCVS I expect to talk to member services or equivalent. A member of the public talking to customer services will consider they are talking to the equivalent of Sky or ASDA and are likely to be about as unimpressed.

Good service is what matters but it is very important to maintain a degree of professionalism. Just for the next ten years until I retire. Once there the profession can spiral down as trade, as much as it likes because i will have had enough of a fine profession becoming shopkeepers!

RE: RCVS registration as a locum
I sympathise with how you feel Martin, but it really is a difficult issue. The College would have to prove that something that a veterinary surgeon did was clearly outside the bounds of accepted veterinary practice to be able to take action. It would open a whole new can of worms if we questioned the evidence base for every procedure that is currently carried out in practice and deemed whether it crossed the threshold or not. Is it possible for couples to get, as well, only one copy of RCVS news? Me and my wife receive to one gets immediately unassembled to go in the recycling and we read both from the same copy.

RE: RCVS registration as a locum
Ummmm - this should be easy to sort as you shouldn't be receiving any hard copies of the Register any more. In order to save a few rainforests we now produce it online and only produce a small number of hard copies for those that request it in order to comply with the relevant Regulations.

Anything else you want sorted? Global warming perhaps??

OK Red starred myself for that comment, I did think that I hadn't seen one for a while.

i didn't mind because he was a friend.

i was surprised that he managed to get it out of them.

I meant to follow it up at the time but was quite busy and didn't get round to it.

I'm sure they treat our data more confidentially now
