Delivered pizza is the bane of my life - hate the stuff! Always eat a slice or two out of hunger then remember why I hate it...the best stuff we ever got was a small company that delivered hand made to order sandwiches , and a drug rep once got in take away fish and chips from the chippy near the venue which was lovely.

Ah, so THAT's why my boss got 3 of us to start organising clinical clubs!

We try and do one a month, get everyone to agree on a topic, and go from there. Sometimes it can be quite frustrating, one person talking and everyone else sitting there waiting for it to finish. We do them in an evening, but get bucketloads of pizza delivered to the practice.

RE: In-house discussions/journal club qualifying as CPD?

Anything that requires extra, unexpected, treatment would (should) go in the book. I don't think clipper rash at time of clipping would, but if the animal had to come back (other than the scheduled post op check) then it would go in the book.

We started the book when we stopped routine antibiotics at time of surgery so we were very keen to record ANYTHING abnormal. (No routine Buster collars either). A seroma or wound interference would be in there - it we knew about it.

I can see a lot of critical care would increase things to talk about.

I wouldn't record a dead calf at a calving, but maybe I should? If something dies, we were expecting to then we don't record it.

RE: In-house discussions/journal club qualifying as CPD?

We also report things like post spay seromas/ clipper rash/ wound interference etc , vaccine and other drug reactions also go on clinical governance.

RE: In-house discussions/journal club qualifying as CPD?

We do a lot of critical care so things like complicated GI surgeries that get peritonitis - how to spot problems early, be proactive, get back in quick not sit around hoping it will all get better by itself. also managing client expectations, and making sure informed consent is truly informed.and other things like spotting technique issues that result in suboptimal outcomes , needing further training. Spotting issues where suboptimal comms between vets has led to problems for the animal or the owner or vets following the case down the line.

Nothing terrible or embarrassing, but all good to learn about.

RE: In-house discussions/journal club qualifying as CPD?

[quote user="Stephen Courtney"]We record adverse outcomes separately on a file /'client' called 'Messers Clinical Governance' with a separate file for each branch. these are collated before each practice vet meeting, a summary is sent to the head vet and she looks through and eyeballs trends and common issues.
What (broad) sorts of things? I think we have 6 things in our M&M book - 2 dead cows, 2 post op infections, a dog's tumour that got binned and not sent away and a dispensing cock up. I think we started it in 2012..........

RE: In-house discussions/journal club qualifying as CPD?

Totally agree a 2 hour session would be excessive! Run them Friday lunchtime as no one on a half day.

Discuss various things:

Reports back from CPD

Literature reviews - paper presentations

Case presentations

Morbidity and mortality

Practice protocols

Actually very enjoyable. We've all got a lot out of it - I guess we will have been going maybe 3 years now. Generally just do one main thing over 30-45 mins. Can't always manage it, can't always all be there, but do our best to.

Yes we count it as CPD.

Little and often works for us. Much better than a big 2 hour session. I would be reluctant to do it in the evening. It's 2015, can't you Skype branches and run it as a virtual meeting?

Some good resources on the RCVS Knowledge website and the CEBVM (Nottingham) sites.

RE: In-house discussions/journal club qualifying as CPD?

Clinical governance and sharing CPD / journal club are two different things, though i would agree both can count towards CPD requirements if you can demonstrate learning objectives.

We record adverse outcomes separately on a file /'client' called 'Messers Clinical Governance' with a separate file for each branch. these are collated before each practice vet meeting, a summary is sent to the head vet and she looks through and eyeballs trends and common issues. We try to learn all the time, and it's surprising how trends can show up and suggest new ways to do things

Some form of clinical audit also features on practice standards stuff, and one day I'll read the RCVS email on this, i promise!

RE: In-house discussions/journal club qualifying as CPD?

We have just had our first 'clinical governance' meeting this evening on the back of one of my colleague's CPD courses about management and team practice.

We are planning on having a meeting every few months, lasting about 2hrs each time. The agenda will be roughly set beforehand and we will take it in turns to 'host' at home. Matters to cover will revolve around one interesting case each, or a case where we feel we could have done more/mistakes made/how to learn from mistakes (not a blame-game!!) but can then expand into evidence-based medicine and clinical discussions. We are also looking to introduce audits if required.

And yes, it can definitely be counted as CPD!

RE: In-house discussions/journal club qualifying as CPD?

We are just starting one of these - I think it's a requirement for some standard or other to prove that CPD is shared between team members and this is one way to do it.
