We've all heard the 5 minutes per month of life, but has that come from any well regarded studies? It makes sense not to take young pups for

RE: How much exercise for puppies?

These are all helpful replies. It's a relief to know I'm not missing something important in advising my clients that a Sunday stroll is not going to hurt their young dogs. A lot of dogs I see are under exercised, rather than over, which is a completely different post.

RE: How much exercise for puppies?

Avoid intense or repetitive exercise but other than that whatever they want to do is fine. I usually say if the dog is off the lead and under its own steam they can run around all day, because that is what they'll do if left to their own devices. Don't throw balls for long periods of time, take for 10 mile hikes or go jogging until after a year. I looked for good quality evidence on this issue a couple of years ago and could only find one study that compared dogs allowed to run free with those kept in cages (it was a very old study). Those kept in cages had less hip dysplasia but it turned out they were kept in such small cages they constantly had to crouch, which altered the position of their femoral head in the acetabulum, increasing acetabular coverage and changing the developmental forces on the joint. I don't have the reference I'm afraid.

RE: How much exercise for puppies?

http://skeptvet.com/Blog/2009/12/exercise-in-puppies-are-there-rules/

RE: How much exercise for puppies?

In answer to your last question, no I haven't.

I too use the '5 minutes per month of age' rule, twice daily and until the animal is skeletally mature. We also advise no strenuous walks or rough terrain particularly for at-risk breeds.

Common sense would apply though and in answer to your question about the Sunday stroll, no, it probably wouldn't do harm if it was just on Sundays and was just a stroll (ie. no hooling around like a loony or repetitive ball games) on relatively flat and even ground.
