It's there to help the vet/VN get something useful out of the process, and it is not compulsory. Like most things, what you get out of it is likely to be related to what you are prepared to put in. Referring back to it after a period of time can be particularly helpful.

We've nearly finished programming the 'claim CPD' function coming to VetSurgeon.org

I have a question I'd like to ask everyone:

RCVS likes you to record two things about your CPD:

'What did I learn from this'

and

'How will I use what I learned in practice'

Questions:

How much text do you think you might want to record in answer to those questions. A couple of sentences? A couple of paragraphs? War and Peace? I suspect a couple of sentences, but we need to make sure that the design of various things allows for as much as you might need.

Also curious how many of you are already recording that kind of detail.

Well, the mechanics haven't been finalised yet, but current thinking is that you click the button at the top of any page, the drop down appears, you type in the time spent (and additional notes) and press submit.

I did think about trying to automate it, but it does present a lot of additional problems.

For example, on a forum thread you might spend a lot more time on a subject than just the time recorded whilst you're on a specific page of a forum (for example, if you spend time composing a post offline, or if a thread causes you to go and research something further on another website, or if you spend time posting on a page only to come back later and spend more time on it).

And what happens if you get caught short half way through something? We couldn't count time spent on the loo as CPD!

Also, the new system will mean you can enter CPD for events listed in the CPD Section, which are all hosted outside VetSurgeon, many of them offline.

Finally, I envisage this being used to record significant things you've learned via the site, and not keep details of every 3.5 seconds you've spent on a particular page. So I think requiring a little thought about time spent (together with the 'what I learned / how I will use it', as encouraged by the RCVS) will lead to a better quality of record.

So, all in all, I think better for you to specify how long you've spent on a given activity on the site, though might look to include some kind of timing aid in the future.

Again, under development, so I can look into any requests. Current plan is that the system will record the date you pressed 'claim CPD'. Technically possible to 'Claim CPD' on content you've read / contributed to in the past, but since it will record the claim as the day you pressed the button, I think it only makes sense to back-claim anything within the current CPD year.

Also, since we do not record time spent on the site and you won't be able to remember with a great deal of accuracy, I'd suggest you'd need to be conservative in your claim (easier if you're claiming for a thread you have actually posted in - as opposed to just reading - because you'll be able to say with a greater degree of accuracy how long it would have taken you to post it).

Do you (everyone) agree with my thinking? As I say, under development now, so will consider any thoughts / requests.

Well, to be fair, you already can justify time on here as it has always been CPD-qualifying. But I guess the point is that few people can really be bothered to keep a note of time spent in forum discussions they've learned from, so in real life it doesn't get the recognition it deserves.

Well, these things are a bit like building projects, you never really know until you've taken down the ceiling whether the joists need replacing. But within weeks (rather than months) is what I have been told to expect.
