Maybe someone did some maths. Typical fee charged by large animal practice for a calving. Typical hourly rate charged by other professionals (solicitors/accountants/dentists/doctors in private practice) Conclusion - that's the time a typical calving takes!

Sadly did not manage to switch the Archers off in time. Was looking for fruit trees at the time.

Actual calving time from start of intervention was a less than a couple of minutes! Pretty good stuff. Did not even need a calving aid. If only they were all that easy!!

Male friend said I was the coolest dad he'd ever met. Can't imagine what would have been said if I'd been listening to the Archers (hypothetical of course as it wouldn't have been on at that time)!

Well Pip has just graduated from agricultural college, she's got to show she's learnt something!

I quite like the idea of being a script advisor.

Have just heard someone the The Bull refer to a calving where the calf was in 'posterior presentation'. Even vets just stick to 'backwards', never mind a Grundy...!

Maybe we should offer our collective expertise as veterinary script advisors?

Langford is about 5 minutes from the Thatchers brewery. We'd often share a 5l barrel between two before going out... think over the years I built up a tolerance.

Since when was the Archers supposed to be exciting? Comforting, stable,a little world to escape to! There is enough real nastiness out there already!

Wren I don't listen to the Archers, but if I did, I strongly suspect I would be like Pip. I would love to turn the clock back to when farm-gate prices were high enough that cows could have names, wild-life could be respected, and profits were high enough that the farmers could be prosperous, and the cows cared for. Zero grazing mega-dairies fill me with horror - concentration camps for cows!

I was really hoping that sanctimonious Pip (the new one...) might have succumbed to Toby's charms (possibly might require the aid of something pharmaceutical in her half of Shires) and become pregnant. She and Toby could then have ousted Ruth and David and taken over every square foot of Ambridge with ethical geese, moments before the biggest ever outbreak of Swaziland Goose Pox Virus struck the Midlands and they both went down with the ship. Possibly whilst covered in zoonotic pox pustules. One can only hope.

As for Rob.... And Helen for putting up with him....

Bring back stereotypical cheeky chappy Scot Jazzer. At least he's never tried to be ethical or organic or start a shop.

It's pointless arranging a contract on Ruth. The Archers death rate is apparently (according to the BMJ) comparable to that of the UK population. However, in approx 45 years of on/off listening, it is the males who have the fatal or serious accidents and the females who tend to pull through the serious disease (notable exceptions being Grace Archer and Betty Tucker).

So even if there was a contract on Ruth, the assassin would miss and take out a male. The tedious Tom would be great.

Bring back Nelson!!

Yes I got hooked in about 1984 in my second job as driving across the Pennines to see my boyfriend (now husband) I could only get long wave radio in my car. Didn't take long to be interested in what happens next...

And I love Radio 4 anyway!
