Laughed out loud. Well you might find it just happens without you learning anything. Basically, it just means that if you type :) it will automatically turn into a smiley face.

We're keeping the post count, but I'm dispensing with points because they are awarded purely for volume of activity.

Instead, I'm moving more towards a measurement of quality of posting, which I think is a more valuable measure.

That's kind of my hope, that people will try and achieve high quality scores / rankings for posting friendly, helpful, valuable, collaborative, polite, thoughtful, good-mannered, kind, funny or thought-provoking content.

Quality scores (and therefore rankings) are recalculated every time a post is starred or liked, so there is never a loser, just an opportunity for people to up their game and move up the rankings!

This all sounds brilliant, esp the 'continue reading' and 'tangent' options. But I'll miss the points/post-count option, it gives a more nuanced impression of a poster's experience than simple badges, given it's not immediately obvious by looking at them on what grounds the badges have been awarded.

Also, what about displaying the date each member joined next to their avatar (probably should have mentioned that earlier I'm guessing ).

All in all though sounds brilliant, and vetsurgeon.org is still the best vet discussion group around!
