A bit harsh possibly ? Never had any dealings with him but the TV image makers do need an image to sell , the modest shy man or woman who stays in theatre all day doing good things then goes home to his/her modest country home and modest family is not that interesting to those that are hooked on Jeremy Kyle and East Enders.

..and continuing the theme of being misunderstood I can see that you too secretly admire Noel Fitzpatrick. He is, on balance, as you say, a force for good and in his practice, foundation and the new vet school he has created a legacy. When he is retired these will go on rather than being extinguished, eradicated from the landscape by a block of flats.

Given the advances in equipment, technology and incresing mountains of information to go through, the presenter was advocating that we need radical changes in the way undergrads are taught. Following the preclinical years, the proposal was to introduce specialisation from third year, which would allow those graduating to slot easily into their preferred areas......BUT still allow those wanting to be "general practitioners" to pursue a "diluted" curriculum.
I personally wouldn't want my veterinary education too specialised whilst at vet school. Partly because I don't know what I want to go into yet even at the end of 4th year (although I have an idea of what I don't want to do) and partly because I feel that it is good to have a general knowledge across a range of subject/species.
I think 'day 1 nearly competent' is the closest we can hope to achieve. The bigger class sizes mean that there is less practical experience available for undergraduates. The good students need some ambition and to go out and get the experience they need to make them employable on day 1. Graduation is just the beginning.

When I qualified I had helped with 1 bitch spay and done half another at college. I had a great place to see practice and I'd done some myself and parts of maybe 12. We had a 4th year student recently who had NEVER rectalled a cow. I was shocked.
I think students need a bit more than ambition to go and get the 'experience they need'. The reality is that some practices are over subscribed and this will only get worse with more students. I have seen practices book up for 2 years or more in advanced and it's difficult to plan that far ahead, especially when you don't know which practice is a 'good' one. I think it also depends on the vet who you are with; how much individual vets let you do can vary greatly. So I do think you need a bit of luck! And if you want to get to a 'better' practice further afield from home or go abroad then you need money too.

Re: First opinion practice
Ah come on Jon, your sarcasm notwithstanding, you only want rid of me because I give as good I get from you. Not keen on all that touchy feely stuff though , I think clients should not be encouraged into your personal space, familiarity and contempt etc. I think thank you very much a paid bill maybe a card or box of chocs for the staff , not free entry to a grab a granny session .

Re: First opinion practice
You'll be sadly missed. You know the mantra - if you can't take it, don't dish it. You'll miss me really. But we must be careful of breaking new regs. I think Arlo should write into the constitution that JGW, Martin A., Anthony T., David M., Michael W., and Hannah Wynne baiting is legitimate.

Re: First opinion practice

Steroid responsive meningitis and GME are two separate conditions.
My post was rather tongue in cheek Robin and was mild Anthony and Wynne baiting (hopefully thats still within the new rules of engagement) so don't get too excited but I would still draw your attention to this quote from Michael's link: "Steroid-responsive meningoencephalitis is any noninfectious meningoencephalitis that responds well to corticosteroids and usually has an excellent prognosis. This could represent mild forms of GME or PDE, but there are two separate conditions recognized also".
As I understand it, steroid responsive meningitis mainly occurs in younger dogs and usually has a much better prognosis, with most cases going in to complete remission. The prognosis with GME however is much more guarded. And I hate Supervet too, it has to be the worst of those programmes. Both him and the sort of clientele he deals with.

Re: First opinion practice
Actually in answer to the question - no-one.
