In my experience this is very rare, it's years since I've had anyone do it.

Re: Tumour of the day....
Not necessarily, how often have we had owners taking their animals in extreme discomfit home because they want the poor creature to "die naturally"?
Not often, I can think of maybe 1 case in the past 5 years. Charity clinics are the worst for this as the client has nothing to lose as they aren't paying anything, and if they say the classic 'Is there any chance at all' it's tough to say no. However I have told clients that they are causing suffering by allowing an animal to linger, but you need to be really firm with them (charity cases)

There is a difference between lecturing a client on presentation and talking them through the options when they are undecided.

This is a thread that needs the star system so the public can see vets' concern for this sort of neglect.

Re: Tumour of the day....
I suspect it was the classical case of the owner not bringing the pet in because they're scared we will say it has to be PTS and or/tell them off so it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.
I agree with this

For every 1 presented, how many others are disposed of in an inhumane way?

How many small mammals do we actually euthanise? I can't believe all the others die naturally, especially when rat tumours are so common.

Quick start soaked in cotton wool and placed in a sealed box is used by Hamster breeders for example.

I never get cross with these presentations, it's counterproductive and as Martin says, they are often/always embarrassed and a lecture from a gray haired professional is the last thing they want.

Was this client aware that this pet was suffering and ignoring it or are they completely stupid?.There is no point in involving the rspca prosecuting stupid people for being stupid but with a bit of luck a visit and a few harsh words from an inspector may discourage them from having another pet they are not going to look after properly. You can only take the high moral ground if you euthanise it FOC then involve the RSPCA. We see this kind of disaster unfolding all the time , bitches with mammary masses excoriated and infected by dragging on the floor ,the "client" blaming the PDSA for withdrawing their qualification after someone in the house got a job and the bennys changed. Its usually covered in a bath towel and they usually want you to examine it in the back of the car outside because they are too embarrassed to bring it into the waiting room where the other clients will see it. The other view is that what ever you do ,it will not stop them having another pet, but reporting them and causing an incident will mean the next rotting pet disaster will just get left to die slowly locked in a shed or an outside toilet. So just biting your lip and getting on with it may not always be a bad thing .

Re: Tumour of the day....
