I agree that welfare would be even worse if there was no veterinary input, and that it's a job someone has to do. It's just I can't imagine anybody actually wanting to do it, any more than I can imagine anybody wanting to work in a sewage plant,
I am sure there are lots of happy people working in sewage plants. One of the happiest people I have seen recently was the chap from Dyno Rod. Clearly loved clearing a good blockage, a bit like some vets really!

Re: veterinary public health

I agree that welfare would be even worse if there was no veterinary input, and that it's a job someone has to do.

thats what it says on the university of ulster website , its run in conjuction with the veterinary college in dublin. i looked at that course you are doing at the rvc , its very expensive and i couldnt afford it . over here in ireland its impossible to get into department of agriculture without that course in vph from northern ireland . once you get in the department of agriculture here as a vet , they then pay for you to to do the 10000 pound epidemiology course in london , great perk of the job.

cheers mac

Re: veterinary public health
What a horrible sector to want to work in.

Wynne
It may be horrible for some especially working with little support from an employer. I did a fair stint some years back and found it challenging and surprisingly fulfilling.

I was fairly independent and supported by the MHS and I am proud of much of the welfare improvements we oversaw.

It does not have to be a bad sector to work in but must be grim if you are caught between bullying business owners and unsupportive employers.

Re: veterinary public health
Well it's a good thing someone does, Wynne!

Can you imagine the implications of a meat-producing system with no veterinary input at the point of slaughter, no inspection of meat before being sent for human consumption and no-one safeguarding the welfare of food-producing animals ?
You don't have to, just read history books and read up on the epidemics of disease prior to the 1800s!

Re: veterinary public health

Well it's a good thing someone does, Wynne!

Hi Mcflea, that's interesting. I have just finished the PG Cert in Vet Epidemiology and VPH with the RVC. I didn't know it qualified me to do anything. Do you have any more info on where i might find more on eu reg 854/2004 ? Or indeed a link for the Bristol OVS course.
